Angama Mara Perches Thirty Tented Suites on the Rim of the Siria Escarpment

Angama Mara sits on the rim of the Siria, or Oloololo, Escarpment, a wall of the Great Rift Valley that drops away into the Mara Triangle, the western section of Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve. Opened in June 2015 by longtime safari operators Steve and Nicky Fitzgerald, the camp was built specifically to exploit this vantage: nearly every suite looks straight down over the plains where the wildebeest migration crosses each year.

Two small camps of fifteen tents each

Rather than one large lodge, Angama Mara is split into North and South Camp, each with fifteen glass-fronted tented suites raised on stilts along the escarpment edge. The glass front wall of each suite frames the view in place of a conventional window, and a private veranda extends the room outward over the slope.

A camp built around photography

The Fitzgeralds' background in photographic safaris shows in Angama's approach: the property runs its own on-site photographic studio and gallery, and guides are trained to prioritise camera angles and light alongside sightings, a point of difference from more conventional Mara camps.

Because the escarpment overlooks the migration corridor rather than sitting within it, Angama's location gives guests a rare overview of the annual wildebeest migration's river crossings during the July-October season, in addition to closer game drives onto the plains below.

Traveller tips

  • The nearest airstrips are a short charter flight from Nairobi's Wilson Airport.
  • The wildebeest migration typically reaches the Mara Triangle between July and October, the camp's busiest season.
  • Days on the escarpment can be windy even when the plains below are still; pack a proper layer for early morning game drives.
  • With only thirty suites across both camps, Angama books out well ahead for the migration months.
