El Questro Homestead sits inside the El Questro Wilderness Park, a working cattle station turned private conservation area covering roughly 700,000 acres of the East Kimberley, one of Australia's most remote and least populated corners. The Homestead itself is reached by light aircraft, helicopter or a drive along the unsealed Gibb River Road, roughly 100 kilometres from Kununurra, the nearest town of any size.

Ten suites, twenty guests, one river

The Homestead caps its own occupancy at twenty guests across ten suites, six of them with private decks over the Chamberlain River. Rates are inclusive of all meals and a set of signature experiences, and the interiors mix contemporary furnishings with rustic Australian pieces, a deliberate contrast to the sandstone gorges and cattle-station history just outside.

Built around the wilderness, not around a pool

Days here are structured around the surrounding park rather than fixed resort facilities: helicopter transfers to remote swimming holes, guided bushwalks through gorge country, a picnic at a secluded rock pool, or dinner set up on a cliff-top platform above the river. A tennis court and tropical gardens sit within the homestead grounds, but the draw is unmistakably the scale of country beyond them.

A recognised address in a hard-to-reach place

El Questro Homestead has been recognised with a MICHELIN Key, a marker the guide applies to a small number of stays worldwide for the overall quality of the guest experience rather than for any single amenity. In the Kimberley's case, that experience is inseparable from the remoteness itself, since almost nothing about reaching the Homestead is convenient.

Traveller tips

  • Kununurra Airport is the usual arrival point, connected onward to the Homestead by light aircraft, helicopter or a station transfer along the Gibb River Road.
  • The Kimberley's dry season, roughly May to October, is the practical window for road access and outdoor activities; the wet season can cut off unsealed routes entirely.
  • With only ten suites, the Homestead books out well ahead of peak dry-season months.
  • Mobile coverage is limited to non-existent across much of the station, worth planning around before arrival.
