Limalimo Lodge Puts Ethiopia's Simien Mountains Escarpment Right Outside the Window

A cliff-edge lodge built from local stone above one of Africa's most dramatic escarpments gives travellers heading into Ethiopia's Simien Mountains National Park a comfortable base within sight of Gelada baboon troops and some of the country's highest peaks.

Limalimo Lodge sits directly on the escarpment edge of Ethiopia's Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, roughly two to two and a half hours' drive from Gondar in the country's northern highlands. Opened in the mid-2010s and built largely from local stone and timber, the lodge was designed to sit low against the landscape rather than dominate it, with a little over a dozen rooms scattered across its hillside site so that most open directly onto the escarpment drop.

A grandstand for the Simiens' wildlife

The national park is one of the few places left where large troops of Gelada baboons, a species found only in Ethiopia's highlands, can be watched at close range grazing on the escarpment's grasslands; the lodge's terraces look directly over terrain the troops regularly cross. Walia ibex and, more rarely, the Ethiopian wolf also range through the park's higher ground, though sightings of the wolf in particular are far from guaranteed.

Built as a base for the park's high routes

Most guests use Limalimo as a staging point before or after trekking further into the park toward Ras Dashen, at just over 4,500 metres Ethiopia's highest peak, rather than as a trekking lodge in its own right; its own grounds and short walking trails are geared more toward guests recovering from, or preparing for, time on the escarpment's rougher routes.

A model built around the local community

The lodge has positioned itself as a community-linked operation rather than a purely private one, drawing staff from villages around the park and channelling a share of its business toward local guiding and conservation work tied to the park's management. That framing has made it one of the more frequently cited examples of community-based tourism in Ethiopia's highlands, as the country pushes to develop the Simiens as a trekking destination beyond its established backpacker routes.

Traveller tips

  • Limalimo Lodge is roughly 105km, about two to two and a half hours by road, from Gondar, which has the nearest airport with regular domestic connections.
  • The dry season from October to March offers the clearest escarpment views and the most reliable trekking conditions.
  • Nights at altitude can be cold even when days are warm; pack layers regardless of season.
  • Multi-day treks into the park require a scout and, for some routes, a guide arranged through the park authority; the lodge can help arrange both.
