7 Things to Do at Tso Moriri, Ladakh's Quieter High-Altitude Lake

At over 4,500 metres on Ladakh's Changthang plateau, Tso Moriri draws far fewer visitors than Pangong Tso, but pairs a 400-year-old monastery, migratory birdlife and Changpa nomad culture with some of the region's most dramatic high-altitude scenery.

Tso Moriri lies in the Changthang plateau of eastern Ladakh, a high-altitude lake at just over 4,500 metres that sees a fraction of the traffic passing through the more famous Pangong Tso, despite similarly dramatic scenery. Its relative quiet, and its status as a Ramsar wetland and wildlife sanctuary, are largely the point.

1. Walk the shoreline at Korzok

The village of Korzok, on the lake's western shore, is the natural base for exploring Tso Moriri, and its lakefront path gives long, uncrowded views across the water toward the surrounding peaks.

2. Visit Korzok Monastery

Perched above the village, this roughly 400-year-old monastery houses about 70 monks and a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha alongside older Tibetan Buddhist paintings, and remains an active centre of Changpa religious life rather than a museum piece.

3. Watch for black-necked cranes and migratory birdlife

Tso Moriri is one of the few known breeding sites of the endangered black-necked crane outside Tibet, and the surrounding wetlands draw bar-headed geese, Brahminy ducks and other migratory species through the summer months.

4. Look for kiang and other Changthang wildlife

The plains around the lake support the Tibetan wild ass, known locally as kiang, along with marmots and Himalayan ibex, all visible without needing to leave the main lakeside routes.

5. Camp on the lakeshore

Designated campsites near Korzok allow a night beside the water under Ladakh's notably dark, high-altitude skies, a step further into the landscape than a day trip from Leh allows.

6. Time a visit to the Korzok Gustor festival

Held annually at the monastery, the Gustor festival features masked cham dances performed by monks, drawing Changpa nomad families from across the Changthang plateau and offering a rare window into the region's living pastoral culture.

7. Combine it with Tso Kar and the wider Changthang loop

Tso Kar, a smaller salt lake roughly two hours away, is often paired with Tso Moriri on a Changthang circuit that also touches the Manali-Leh highway, making it possible to see two very different high-altitude lakes on one route.

Traveller tips

  • An Inner Line Permit is mandatory for Tso Moriri because of its proximity to the Line of Actual Control; arrange it in Leh before travelling.
  • The lake is roughly 220 km, or seven to eight hours, by road from Leh; acclimatise in Leh first, as altitude sickness is a genuine risk this high.
  • Tso Moriri is generally accessible from May to September; winter snow closes the high passes leading to it.
  • Korzok village has basic homestays and campsites; book ahead during the short peak summer season.
