7 Things to Do in Hanle, India's Dark Sky Reserve in Changthang

A high-altitude village in eastern Ladakh, home to one of Asia's highest astronomical observatories, has become India's only officially designated Dark Sky Reserve, with strict lighting rules that keep its night skies genuinely black.

Hanle sits at around 14,000 feet in the Changthang plateau of eastern Ladakh, a former Buddhist monastery settlement whose remoteness and clear, dry air made it the site of the Indian Astronomical Observatory decades before that same darkness earned it formal protection as the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve in 2022. Here are seven ways to spend time there.

1. Visit the Indian Astronomical Observatory

Run by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the observatory sits on Mount Saraswati above the village at close to 15,000 feet, among the highest sites of its kind in the world, and houses telescopes used for both optical and gamma-ray astronomy. Public access to the facility itself is limited and usually arranged in advance, but the road up gives close views of the domes against the Changthang skyline.

2. Book a night at the community-run stargazing park

A public dark-sky viewing area near the village, developed with the reserve's designation, offers guided telescope sessions run by locally trained astro-guides, a rare model in India where night-sky tourism is usually left to private operators. Sessions depend on clear skies and moon phase, so flexibility around the visit is worth building in.

3. See Hanle Monastery, older than the observatory by centuries

Hanle Monastery, a Gelugpa institution founded in the 17th century, overlooks the village from a low rise and remains an active site of worship, with prayer halls open to visitors outside of ceremonies. Its long history in this remote corner of Ladakh predates the region's astronomical fame by more than 300 years.

4. Look for the Changthang plateau's wildlife

The surrounding Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary supports Tibetan gazelle, kiang (Tibetan wild ass) and, at the right times, black-necked crane, a species that breeds in the region's high-altitude wetlands. Sightings depend on season and patience rather than being guaranteed, but the open terrain makes spotting distant herds relatively straightforward.

5. Respect the reserve's lighting rules

As India's first Dark Sky Reserve, Hanle operates under restrictions on outdoor lighting, including shielded fixtures and warm-toned bulbs in the core zone, rules that visitors and homestays are expected to follow rather than treat as optional. The payoff is a genuinely unlit night sky, increasingly rare even in remote parts of the Himalaya.

6. Stay in a village homestay

Hanle has a small but growing network of family-run homestays rather than hotels, offering simple rooms and home-cooked Ladakhi meals, and generally the most practical way to stay overnight this deep into Changthang. Advance booking is advisable given limited capacity.

7. Build in acclimatisation before arriving

At close to 14,000 feet and reached by a long, high-altitude drive from Leh, Hanle is not a sensible first stop on a Ladakh itinerary; most visitors spend at least two nights acclimatising in Leh before making the journey east.

Traveller tips

  • Hanle is roughly 4 to 5 hours by road from Leh via Nyoma; an Inner Line Permit, arranged in Leh, is required for Indian and foreign travellers alike.
  • The clearest, driest skies are typically between October and March, though winter nights are severely cold.
  • Mobile network coverage is minimal to absent in Hanle; plan accordingly.
  • Fuel is not reliably available beyond Nyoma, so top up in Leh before setting out.
