Sea Island, Georgia Has Hosted a G8 Summit and Never Stopped Being a Private Club at Heart
A barrier island off the Georgia coast built almost entirely around The Cloister resort, Sea Island has stayed low-profile enough to host a G8 summit and still be described as a well-kept secret.

Sea Island is a five-mile barrier island off the Georgia coast, connected to the mainland town of St Simons by a short causeway, that has been organised around a single resort, The Cloister, since it opened in 1928. The Sea Island Company, founded by Howard Coffin and later run for decades by the Jones family, still owns and operates most of the island today, which is part of why it has never developed the dense second-home sprawl of comparable East Coast enclaves.

A summit-sized reputation, quietly held
The Cloister's standing was confirmed on the world stage in 2004, when it hosted the G8 summit, bringing the leaders of the world's major economies to an island most Americans had never heard of. That kind of profile has done little to change the place: Sea Island still markets itself on privacy and continuity rather than visibility, with a members' club structure that keeps much of the island's beach and grounds away from casual day visitors.

What the old money actually does there
Golf, principally: Sea Island's courses, including the Seaside course that has hosted PGA Tour Champions events, are as much the draw as the beach. A shooting school, a marina and a spa round out a resort built for a slower, more ritualised kind of holiday than the wider Golden Isles tend to attract.
St Simons, just across the causeway
Sea Island's neighbour, St Simons Island, is larger, more accessible and considerably less exclusive, with its own lighthouse, public beaches and a historic pier village. Most visitors to The Cloister base their wider Golden Isles trip around it, since Sea Island itself has almost no independent commercial strip.
Traveller tips
- Brunswick Golden Isles Airport is the nearest regional airport; Jacksonville, Florida is the closest larger hub, roughly an hour and a half by road.
- Much of Sea Island's beach access and facilities run through The Cloister and its associated club, so a stay there remains the most straightforward way to see the island properly.
- Late spring and autumn avoid both the height of Georgia's coastal summer humidity and hurricane-season uncertainty.
- St Simons Island, across the causeway, has its own hotels, restaurants and public beaches for a lower-cost base nearby.
