Telluride Turned a Dying Silver Town Into One of America's Most Private Ski Retreats

A box canyon so enclosed it only has one road in has kept Telluride, Colorado's former silver-mining town, one of American skiing's quietest and most expensive retreats.

Telluride sits at the end of a box canyon in Colorado's San Juan Mountains, reachable by a single road that dead-ends against the surrounding cliffs, a geography that has done more than any gate or guard to keep the town private. What began as a 19th-century silver-mining camp, prosperous enough to have hosted Butch Cassidy's first bank robbery in 1889, declined along with the region's mining industry through the 20th century before a ski resort, built above the old town from the 1970s onward, gave it a second, wealthier life.

A National Historic Landmark District that kept its scale

Telluride's entire original town site is a National Historic Landmark District, which has kept its Victorian-era commercial buildings and miners' cottages largely intact and limited how much the town itself, as opposed to the ski resort built above it, has been able to expand. That preserved scale is part of what distinguishes Telluride from larger Colorado resort towns: it still reads as a compact 19th-century mining town rather than a purpose-built resort development.

A free gondola, not a road, links the two halves

Telluride's ski area and its purpose-built sister village, Mountain Village, sit on the far side of the ridge above the historic town, connected by a free public gondola rather than a road, since building one through the surrounding cliffs was never practical. The gondola has become one of the few genuinely free, resident-and-visitor-shared pieces of infrastructure in a town otherwise known for private homes tucked into the surrounding aspen groves.

A film festival that stayed small on purpose

The Telluride Film Festival, held each Labor Day weekend since 1974, has deliberately kept its programme and venue capacity small, screening films without red-carpet spectacle in the town's historic Sheridan Opera House and a handful of other modest venues. That restraint, more than any single high-profile resident, is often cited as the clearest sign of how the town has chosen to handle the wealth and fame that followed it up the canyon.

Traveller tips

  • Telluride is reached by regional flights into Telluride Regional Airport or a roughly six-and-a-half-hour drive from Denver.
  • The free gondola linking the historic town and Mountain Village runs daily in ski season and through summer; it's worth riding for the views alone.
  • Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado's tallest free-falling waterfall, sits at the canyon's dead end above the town and is a short hike or drive from the centre.
  • The Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend fills the town's limited accommodation well in advance; book months ahead if visiting then.
