7 Things to Do in Mandvi, Kutch's Royal Port Town on the Arabian Sea
Once a major shipbuilding port for the Kutch princely state, Mandvi pairs a working wooden shipyard with a beachfront summer palace and one of Gujarat's longest stretches of open coastline.

Mandvi sits on the Gulf of Kutch coast in Gujarat, roughly 60 kilometres from Bhuj, and was once one of western India's busiest ports, built on a shipbuilding trade that connected Kutch to East Africa and the Gulf under the region's former princely rulers. That maritime history still shapes the town today, from a working dhow-building yard on the Rukmavati River to the beachfront palace the Kutch royal family built as a coastal retreat.

1. Vijay Vilas Palace
Built in 1929 for the Maharao of Kutch, Vijay Vilas Palace blends Rajput architectural detailing with a layout designed for sea breezes, set within its own beachfront grounds. Part of the palace remains a private royal residence, while the rest is open to visitors, including a rooftop viewpoint over the surrounding gardens and coastline.
2. The Mandvi shipbuilding yard
Along the Rukmavati River, local craftsmen still build large wooden dhows by hand using techniques passed down through generations, with no formal blueprints beyond experience and eye. Visitors can walk the yard and watch vessels in various stages of construction, one of the few places in India where this specific craft remains an active, commercial trade rather than a demonstration.
3. Mandvi Beach
One of Gujarat's longest and cleanest beaches, Mandvi Beach stretches for several kilometres of relatively flat sand, part of it developed with basic tourist amenities and part left open and undeveloped further along the coast.

4. Mandvi's wind farm coastline
Stretches of the coast near Mandvi host rows of wind turbines, part of Gujarat's early push into wind power, and the turbines' scale against the open shoreline has made this stretch a point of interest distinct from the town's older heritage sites.
5. The old town's Jain and Swaminarayan temples
Mandvi's old quarter holds a cluster of well-maintained Jain temples along with a Swaminarayan temple, both reflecting the trading communities that built their wealth on the town's historic port trade and reinvested it in local religious architecture.
6. Topansar Lake
A quieter stop within the town itself, this stepped tank and small lake gives a sense of Mandvi's older urban water infrastructure, built long before piped water reached this part of Kutch.
7. A walk through the old port quarter
Away from the beach, Mandvi's older streets near the original harbour still show carved wooden balconies and merchant-era façades from the town's trading peak, worth an unhurried walk rather than a quick drive-through.
Traveller tips
- Bhuj is the nearest major town and airport, roughly 60 kilometres and about an hour and a half by road.
- The shipbuilding yard is a working site, not a museum; visit in the morning when craftsmen are most active.
- Winter (November to February) is by far the most comfortable season; Kutch summers are extremely hot.
- Vijay Vilas Palace has separate ticketing for the palace interior and the grounds; check current timings before visiting.
