Bekal sits in Kerala's northernmost district, Kasaragod, a coastal stretch that stays well outside the usual Kochi-Alleppey-Munnar circuit most first-time visitors to the state follow. Its main landmark, Bekal Fort, is the largest fort in Kerala, and the wider area has grown up around it as a low-key beach and backwater destination rather than a heavily packaged resort belt.

1. Bekal Fort

Built in the mid-17th century, most likely under the Kolathiri rajas before later coming under Tipu Sultan and then British control, the laterite fort occupies a headland jutting into the Arabian Sea, with thick keyhole-shaped openings in its seaward walls once used for cannon and observation. Its ramparts give an uninterrupted sweep of coastline in both directions, making the walk around the walls the main reason most visitors come.

2. Bekal Fort Beach

The beach directly below the fort's southern wall is Bekal's main stretch of sand, quieter and less commercial than beaches further south in the state, with the fort's silhouette visible from the shoreline as a natural backdrop for a sunset walk.

3. Kappil Beach

A short drive north, Kappil Beach combines a sandy shoreline with a nearby lagoon where the Trikkannad River meets the sea, giving visitors both a beach and a calmer backwater view within the same stop.

4. Bekal Hole Aqua Park

Set beside the fort's backwaters, this water park offers boating and swimming pools as a family-oriented add-on, useful for travellers combining the fort visit with a half-day of more active recreation nearby.

5. Nithyanandashram and Chandragiri Fort

Further south near Kasaragod town, Chandragiri Fort sits at the mouth of the Chandragiri River and makes for a straightforward half-day trip from Bekal, offering a smaller, less-visited counterpart to Bekal's larger fort with its own river-mouth views.

6. Valiyaparamba backwaters

North of Bekal, the Valiyaparamba backwaters form one of Kerala's larger backwater systems, threaded with small islands and accessible by houseboat or local ferry, offering a quieter alternative to the more touristed Alleppey backwaters further south.

7. Ranipuram hills

An inland day trip from Bekal, Ranipuram's forested hills sit at a noticeably higher elevation than the coast, with trekking trails through shola forest that make for a cooler contrast to a beach-and-fort itinerary.

Traveller tips

  • Kannur International Airport is the nearest airport, roughly an hour's drive from Bekal; Mangaluru airport across the Karnataka border is a similar distance.
  • Kasaragod railway station sits close to Bekal and is served by trains along Kerala's main coastal line.
  • October to March offers the most comfortable weather for fort walks and beach visits, ahead of the pre-monsoon heat.
  • Bekal's beaches are generally quieter than those further south, but a lifeguard presence is not guaranteed everywhere, so caution with sea conditions is worth exercising.
