Koh Samui's Best Villas Have Moved Uphill, Away From the Beach They Once Needed
Koh Samui's newer luxury circuit has shifted from the crowded Chaweng strip to headland and hillside villas above Choeng Mon and Laem Yai, with Ang Thong Marine Park and Fisherman's Village in Bophut as the main excursions.

Koh Samui's reputation was built on Chaweng and Lamai, the busy east-coast beaches that made the island one of the Gulf of Thailand's first mass tourist stops. The more recent story is a quieter one: a run of hillside villas and headland resorts along the island's north and southeast coasts that has turned Samui into a genuine luxury base, distinct from the backpacker circuit that put it on the map.

The headland resorts
Samui's coastline is uneven enough that several properties have built around cliffside and hillside plots rather than flat beachfront, using the terrain for pool villas that step down towards the sea with uninterrupted Gulf views. Laem Yai, a headland on the island's northwest tip, and the hills above Choeng Mon on the northeast coast, are the two areas most associated with this style of resort, generally quieter and more private than the central east-coast strip.
Bophut and Fisherman's Village
Bophut, on the north coast, has kept an older wooden shophouse streetscape along what is now known as Fisherman's Village, repurposed over the past two decades into restaurants, boutiques and beach bars without losing its low-rise scale. It sits within easy reach of the northern resort cluster and remains the more walkable dinner option compared with the resort strips further east.
Ang Thong Marine Park, a half-day out
Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, a cluster of roughly forty limestone islands northwest of Samui, is reachable by speedboat in under an hour and makes for the most common day trip off the island, with a viewpoint hike on Ko Wua Talap and a saltwater lagoon on Ko Mae Ko among its better-known stops.

Getting the balance right
Samui airport sits close enough to the island's north coast that transfers to the newer resort areas are generally short, one of the few advantages of an island this compact. Renting a scooter or car remains the easiest way to move between beaches, since the ring road can be slow at peak times but rarely takes more than forty minutes to cross.
Traveller tips
- Samui has its own airport with direct connections to Bangkok and a handful of regional hubs; check current routes before booking connections.
- November to January generally brings the calmest seas and clearest skies; the monsoon season runs roughly October to December, later than mainland Thailand's.
- Ang Thong Marine Park day trips can be booked through most hotels or directly at Na Thon pier.
- The ring road becomes congested around Chaweng in the evenings; allow extra time for transfers during peak season.
