Six Senses Côn Đảo Turns a Former Vietnamese Prison Island Into a Private Beach Retreat

Reachable only by a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City, Côn Đảo spent decades as a colonial-era penal colony before becoming one of Vietnam's most tightly protected national parks, and Six Senses' beachfront villas now sit inside that same conservation zone.

Côn Đảo is an archipelago roughly 230 kilometres southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, in the South China Sea off Vietnam's southern coast, best known historically for Côn Đảo Prison, built under French colonial rule and later used by the South Vietnamese government to hold political prisoners. That history is preserved deliberately rather than smoothed over: the former prison, including its notorious "tiger cage" cells, remains open to visitors on the main island. What has grown up alongside it is a very different story, since most of the archipelago now falls within Côn Đảo National Park, one of Vietnam's most strictly managed protected areas, covering coral reefs, seagrass beds and beaches that support one of the country's most significant sea turtle nesting populations.

A resort built into a national park

Six Senses Côn Đảo sits on Đất Dốc Beach on the main island, its pool villas arranged in low-rise clusters set back from the shoreline behind native dune vegetation rather than stacked toward the water. The design leans on reclaimed timber and driftwood-style furnishings, in keeping with a wider Six Senses house style of understated, low-impact builds, and the property markets itself around the surrounding park rather than in spite of it. Access is almost entirely by air, via a short domestic flight from Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport to Côn Đảo Airport, since the islands' distance from the mainland and national park status have kept large-scale development off the table.

Turtles, not just villas

Côn Đảo's beaches are among the most important green turtle nesting sites in Vietnam, and the resort runs a conservation programme in coordination with national park rangers, allowing guests to join supervised nest monitoring or hatchling releases during the nesting season, which falls broadly between the summer and early autumn months. It's a rare case of a luxury property's signature guest activity being tied directly to an active wildlife protection effort rather than a curated add-on, largely because the surrounding national park's rules leave little room for anything else.

A history that stays visible

Unlike destinations that quietly retire a difficult past once tourism arrives, Côn Đảo keeps its prison history part of the visitor circuit; the Côn Đảo Museum and former prison sites sit only a short drive from the resort, and many visitors combine a beach stay with a half-day at the historical sites. It gives the island a rare tension between memorial and retreat that few tropical getaways in the region attempt to hold onto.

Traveller tips

  • Côn Đảo Airport receives short domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City; there is no international air link direct to the islands.
  • Sea turtle nesting season runs roughly from May to October; exact dates for guest participation depend on ranger schedules and shift year to year.
  • Côn Đảo Prison and its museum are open to the public and worth building into any stay, regardless of where you're based on the island.
  • Being a national park, much of Côn Đảo's coastline and forest is under conservation rules, so independent access to some beaches and trails is restricted outside guided routes.
