7 Things to Do in Kalpa, the Himachal Village That Stares Straight at Kinnaur Kailash
Set on a ridge in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district, Kalpa looks directly across the Sutlej valley at the Kinnaur Kailash range, and its old village lanes, temples and orchards make it worth more than a one-night stop.

Kalpa is a village in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district, set at around 2,960 metres on a ridge that looks straight across the Sutlej valley at the Kinnaur Kailash range, a wall of snow peaks considered sacred as one of Shiva's abodes. Once the district's administrative headquarters before that role shifted to Reckong Peo just below, Kalpa has kept the slower pace of a village whose main daily event is watching the light move across the mountains opposite. Here are seven ways to spend time in it.

1. Watch sunrise over Kinnaur Kailash
The range catches the first light well before the village does, turning the snow gold for a short window each morning; most visitors simply walk out from wherever they are staying rather than seek a specific viewpoint, since the whole village faces the same direction.
2. Wander the old lanes of Chini village
Kalpa's older core, still sometimes called by its former name Chini, is a knot of narrow lanes and wood-and-stone houses with carved balconies, largely unchanged in layout even as newer guesthouses have filled in around the edges.

3. Narayan-Nagini Temple
This wooden, pagoda-roofed temple in the heart of the village, dedicated to a pair of local deities, is a good example of the distinct temple architecture found across Kinnaur, closer in style to the temples of Himachal's higher valleys than to the plains.
4. The old Kila at the village centre
A cluster of older fort-like structures, referred to locally as the Kila, sits near Chini and points to Kalpa's former administrative importance before Reckong Peo took over as district headquarters.
5. Roghi village and the cliff viewpoint
A short drive or walk from Kalpa, the neighbouring village of Roghi has a dramatic viewpoint over a sheer drop into the Sutlej valley, known locally by the blunt nickname Suicide Point for its sudden edge rather than any particular history.
6. Walk through the apple orchards and chilgoza pine forest
Kinnaur is one of Himachal's major apple-growing districts, and Kalpa's slopes are lined with orchards that turn the hillsides pink in spring and are harvest-busy by early autumn, backed by forests of chilgoza, the region's edible pine.
7. Day trip to Reckong Peo
The district headquarters just below Kalpa has the area's main market, bank branches and bus connections onward into Kinnaur and Spiti, and makes a practical stop for supplies even for travellers based in the quieter village above.
Traveller tips
- Shimla is the nearest major town with an airport; Kalpa is roughly a full day's drive from there via Narkanda and Rampur.
- Roads into Kinnaur can be affected by landslides during the monsoon; check current conditions before travelling between June and September.
- Areas further into Kinnaur towards the Tibet border may require permits; Kalpa itself does not, but it is worth checking current rules if continuing onward.
- Warm layers are needed even in summer once the sun drops behind the ridge; nights stay cool at this altitude year-round.
