7 Most Instagrammable Spots in Zakynthos, Greece feature image

Zakynthos, the southernmost of the main Ionian islands, is best known for a single image: a rusted shipwreck sitting on a white sand cove ringed by sheer limestone cliffs. That beach supplies most of the island’s fame, but Zakynthos also holds a marine park protecting nesting loggerhead turtles, a set of sea caves lit an improbable blue, and a scatter of quieter coves on its west coast. Here are seven of its most photographed spots, each with a direct map link.

1. Navagio Beach clifftop viewpoint

The island’s defining image: a cove of white sand and turquoise water accessible only by boat, with the rusted wreck of the MV Panagiotis, which ran aground here in 1980, still resting on the sand. Most of the famous photographs are actually taken from a viewing platform on the clifftop above, reached by road rather than by sea.

2. Blue Caves, Cape Skinari

At the island’s northern tip, a series of sea caves cut into white limestone reflect sunlight off the water into an intense, almost neon blue, best seen by small boat in the calmer, clearer conditions of the morning.

3. Marathonisi, Turtle Island

A small, boat-only islet in Laganas Bay, part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, protecting one of the Mediterranean’s most important nesting beaches for the loggerhead sea turtle; boat trips run from Agios Sostis and Porto Roma, generally staying clear of nesting areas during protected hours.

4. Porto Limnionas

A narrow rocky inlet on the island’s west coast with unusually clear, sheltered water for cliff-jumping and snorkelling, quieter and less built-up than the resort beaches on the east side of Zakynthos.

5. Keri Lighthouse at sunset

At the island’s southwestern tip, the lighthouse at Cape Keri sits above dramatic sea cliffs and is one of the most reliable sunset viewpoints on Zakynthos, looking out over open Ionian Sea with no other coastline in view.

6. Bochali viewpoint

Above Zakynthos Town, the hillside district of Bochali gives a wide view down over the town’s red-tiled rooftops, the harbour and, on a clear day, across to the Greek mainland, best visited in the late afternoon as the light softens.

7. Xigia Beach

A small cove in the island’s north known for the mineral and sulphur springs that feed into the sea here, giving the water an unusual pale turquoise colour and a faint sulphur smell that locals consider part of the beach’s appeal rather than a drawback.

Traveller tips

  • Zakynthos International Airport has seasonal charter and connecting flights from Europe; most itineraries from India route through Athens.
  • Boat access to Navagio Beach itself is periodically restricted following rockfall concerns; check current access rules before planning a trip to the beach rather than the clifftop viewpoint.
  • The National Marine Park enforces speed limits and no-go zones around turtle nesting beaches between roughly May and October; respect posted boat restrictions near Marathonisi and Laganas Bay.
  • July and August are the busiest and hottest months; late spring and September offer calmer seas and thinner crowds at the main viewpoints.
