7 Things to Do in Vagamon, Kerala's Quiet Answer to Munnar
Rolling grassland meadows, a working pine forest and a cliffside monastery sit within a few kilometres of each other in this lesser-visited Idukki hill station.
Sep 25, 2026 · BigTravel.inVagamon sits in Kerala's Idukki district, a scatter of grassy hilltops and tea and cardamom plantations at around 1,100 metres that has stayed noticeably quieter than Munnar despite similar scenery a few hours to its south. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.
1. Vagamon Meadows
Open, rolling grassland spread across a series of low hills, the meadows are Vagamon's best-known image, especially in the monsoon and immediately after, when the grass is at its greenest and mist regularly settles over the hillsides by mid-morning.
2. Vagamon Pine Forest
A stand of tall pines planted decades ago on a hillside as part of an erosion-control effort, the forest's straight, closely spaced trunks and needle-covered floor feel deliberately out of place in Kerala, which is exactly why it has become a popular short stop for visitors and a favoured spot for local pre-wedding photography.
3. Kurisumala Ashram
A Cistercian monastery founded in the 1950s on a hill known locally as Kurisumala, meaning hill of the cross, the ashram blends Christian monastic life with Indian ascetic tradition and still keeps a working dairy farm on its grounds, alongside sweeping views over the surrounding hills.
4. Thangal Hill paragliding site
One of the more established paragliding sites in South India, Thangal Hill's open slopes and reliable thermals have drawn both an annual paragliding event and a steady stream of tandem-flight operators, offering a short flight over the meadows and plantations below for those wanting a different vantage point.
5. Vagamon Lake
A small, human-made lake ringed by hills and shaded walking paths, offering pedal boating and a considerably slower pace than the meadows and viewpoints nearby, it works well as a mid-afternoon stop between the busier sights.
6. Barren Hills
A stretch of exposed, rocky hilltop with little vegetation, quite unlike the green meadows nearby, offering some of Vagamon's widest panoramic views and a noticeably different, starker landscape within the same small area.
7. Marmala Waterfalls
A short trek from the main road leads to this seasonal waterfall dropping through forested rock, most dramatic during and just after the monsoon and considerably quieter than Vagamon's better-known viewpoints, making it a good option for travellers keen to walk rather than drive between sights.
Traveller tips
- Vagamon is roughly a 4 hour drive from Kochi, the nearest major airport, and can also be combined with a visit to Munnar or Thekkady.
- The meadows and pine forest are best visited in the morning before the mist burns off and crowds build up.
- Paragliding at Thangal Hill is weather-dependent; operators typically run mid-morning to early afternoon and may pause flights in poor conditions.
- Marmala Waterfalls involves a short but sometimes slippery walk; sturdy footwear is worth packing, especially in the monsoon months.
