Longitude 131°, a small luxury camp on a private dune within the boundary of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in Australia's Red Centre, has built its reputation on a single idea: its tented pavilions face Uluru directly, with no other building, road, or light source in the frame. It remains one of the most closely watched desert stays in the world precisely because so few properties are allowed this close to the rock.
Why the location is unusual
Most accommodation near Uluru sits several kilometres away at the Yulara resort town, outside the national park. Longitude 131°'s dune-top position, reached only by a private, gated track, is what sets it apart: guests wake to the rock itself rather than driving out to see it.

Inside the pavilions
The tented suites are built on raised platforms with floor-to-ceiling glass facing the rock, canvas walls, and plain, neutral interiors that leave the view as the only real decoration. Rates are all-inclusive, covering meals, most drinks, and a programme of guided walks and talks with staff trained in the area's Anangu culture and ecology.
What fills the days
Mornings and evenings are built around watching the rock change colour at sunrise and sunset, from a dedicated dune-top viewing platform and from private dinners set up in the desert. Guided walks around the base of Uluru and into the domed formations of Kata Tjuta nearby are included, alongside talks on bush food and the stories the traditional owners tie to the landscape.
Getting there
Ayers Rock Airport, a short drive from the property, has direct flights from several Australian state capitals. Given the remoteness and the cost of getting there, most stays are booked for a minimum of two or three nights.
Traveller tips
- Book well ahead; the camp is small and the cooler April-to-October season fills up months in advance.
- Desert nights are cold even when days are hot, so pack layers regardless of season.
- Ask about Kata Tjuta walks and any light installation add-ons when booking, since programming changes from season to season.
- Confirm current flight schedules to Ayers Rock Airport before booking, as regional routes are periodically adjusted.
