Tromsø sits well inside the Arctic Circle on Norway's northern coast, a city whose light changes more dramatically through the year than almost anywhere else easily reachable by direct flight. Summer brings the midnight sun, roughly late May to late July, when the sun never fully sets; winter brings the northern lights, generally visible from September through April, and the two seasons give the same skyline an entirely different look depending on when a visitor arrives.

1. The Arctic Cathedral's triangular facade

Ishavskatedralen, the Arctic Cathedral, is Tromsø's most photographed building, its eleven triangular concrete sections designed to evoke the northern lights, an iceberg or traditional fish-drying racks depending on who is describing it. Its stained-glass east window, added in 1972, makes for a different shot again when photographed from inside.

2. Tromsø Bridge at golden hour

The bridge linking the mainland to Tromsøya island frames the Arctic Cathedral from across the water, a classic wide shot that works particularly well in the low, extended golden light of the shoulder seasons either side of the midnight sun.

3. Storsteinen from the Fjellheisen cable car

The Fjellheisen cable car, running since 1961, climbs 421 metres from Tromsdalen to a ledge on Storsteinen mountain in around four minutes. On a clear day the ledge looks out over Tromsø island, the Arctic Cathedral, the bridge, Kvaløya island and the Lyngen Alps in a single frame, and it is also one of the city's most reliable northern lights viewpoints, sitting above much of the town's ambient light.

4. The colourful harbourfront

Tromsø's old harbour area holds a run of painted wooden warehouses and houses along the waterfront, a lower-key but reliably photogenic alternative to the cathedral and bridge, especially with fishing boats moored in front.

5. Polaria's angled panels

The Arctic-themed museum and aquarium Polaria was built with a distinctive row of tilted panels meant to resemble ice floes pushed up against the shore, giving it a shape unlike any other building in the city and a strong graphic subject in flat winter light.

6. Northern lights over Storsteinen

Between September and April, on a clear night away from cloud cover, the aurora is visible from in and around Tromsø itself, and the elevated, darker vantage at Storsteinen is generally rated the most consistent spot in the immediate city area to catch it.

7. Midnight sun over the fjords

Through the weeks of the midnight sun, the low, unsetting light over Tromsø's surrounding fjords and islands produces a soft, extended golden hour that can run for most of the night, a distinctly different photograph from the same landscape in the low, short days of winter.

Traveller tips

  • The Fjellheisen cable car runs year-round, but check current operating hours, since they shift with the season.
  • Northern lights sightings depend heavily on clear skies and solar activity; build in more than one night if the aurora is the priority.
  • Tromsø's weather changes quickly; pack layers even during the midnight sun period.
  • Winter days are extremely short around the solstice, which affects how much can realistically be covered outside cathedral and viewpoint visits.
