7 Most Instagrammable Spots in Symi, Greece's Neoclassical Harbour Island
Symi, a small Dodecanese island near Rhodes, is built around Gialos, a harbour ringed by neoclassical mansions from its sponge-diving heyday, and a hillside village reached by 500 stone steps.

Symi is a small island in the Dodecanese, closer to the Turkish coast than to most of Greece, reached mainly as a day trip or short stay from Rhodes. Its wealth, built on nineteenth-century sponge diving rather than tourism, left behind a harbour lined with elaborate neoclassical mansions that make it one of the most photographed small ports in Greece. Here are seven spots worth the frame.

1. Gialos harbour from the water
The amphitheatre of ochre, yellow and blue mansions rising from Symi's main harbour, Gialos, is the island's signature view, best taken either from an arriving boat or from the harbourside promenade looking back across the water.
2. The Kali Strata steps
Around 500 stone steps climb from Gialos up to the hilltop village of Chorio, flanked on both sides by more neoclassical houses; the steps themselves, and the framed harbour views partway up, are one of the island's most reliable photo stops.

3. Chorio village
At the top of the Kali Strata, Chorio's quieter streets and pastel houses offer a slower, less crowded version of the same neoclassical architecture found in Gialos below.
4. The Kastro ruins
Built in 1407 by the Knights of the Order of Saint John on high ground above the harbour, little remains of the Kastro beyond fragments of wall, but the climb rewards with an elevated view over Gialos and the water beyond.
5. The sponge boats along the quay
A handful of working boats still moor along Symi's quay as a reminder of the island's sponge-diving trade, their weathered decks a contrast to the manicured mansions behind them.
6. Panormitis Monastery
On the island's southern coast, the Monastery of the Archangel Michael at Panormitis is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Dodecanese, set around a sheltered bay with its own small harbour.
7. The harbour at blue hour
As the light drops after sunset, Gialos's mansions are lit from within while the sky still holds colour, a short window that is often the single most photographed moment on the island.
Traveller tips
- Symi is most easily reached by ferry or excursion boat from Rhodes, a journey of around fifty minutes to just over an hour depending on the service.
- The Kali Strata climb is steep and largely unshaded; early morning or late afternoon avoids the harshest midday heat.
- Panormitis Monastery is a separate trip from the main town and is best combined with a boat excursion around the island.
- Symi can be visited as a day trip from Rhodes, but an overnight stay allows for the harbour at both dawn and blue hour.
