Why St. Tropez, Not Mykonos, Still Defines the European Yacht Season

St. Tropez became a celebrity fixture in the 1950s largely because of one person, Brigitte Bardot, whose presence turned a quiet Provençal fishing port into the place European high society decided to summer. Seven decades later, the yachts have gotten larger and the crowd has changed, but the basic pull, a small old town wrapped around a working harbour, has not.

Pampelonne is the actual address

The town's old port gets the photographs, but Pampelonne Beach, a few minutes south, is where the season's actual social calendar plays out, a five-kilometre stretch lined with the beach clubs, Nikki Beach among the original and still best-known, that turn a beach day into an all-afternoon event with lunch service, music, and a yacht anchorage just offshore for anyone who arrived by water instead of by road.

The old town still matters for the evening

Once the beach clubs close in the late afternoon, the crowd moves back into town for dinner around the port, where the real spectacle is simply watching the superyachts reverse into their berths stern-first, a nightly ritual locals call the yacht parade, drawing as much of a crowd on the quay as any restaurant.

Traveller tips

• Book Pampelonne beach club sun loungers at least a few days ahead in July and August; walk-up availability at the well-known clubs effectively does not exist in peak season.
• Rent a scooter or small car rather than relying on taxis; Pampelonne sits a genuine drive from the old town and summer traffic on the connecting road backs up badly by midday.
• Arrive at the old port by early evening specifically to watch the yacht arrivals; it is free, requires no booking, and is arguably the best people-watching in town.
• Book accommodation in nearby Ramatuelle or Gassin if St. Tropez itself is full or overpriced; both are a short drive away and considerably calmer at night.
• Carry cash for the smaller Pampelonne beach restaurants; card machines are common but connectivity along the beach road is patchy enough to cause delays.

When to go

June and September deliver the same warm Mediterranean water as peak summer with noticeably thinner crowds and beach club rates that drop meaningfully once the July-August rush passes.
