Skytrax, the UK-based air travel research firm, announced the results of its 2026 World Airline Awards in London on 18 September, naming Singapore Airlines the world's best airline for the sixth time. The award is based on more than 24.8 million validated passenger surveys collected between September 2025 and August 2026, covering over 100 nationalities, and is widely treated as the aviation industry's most closely watched independent passenger ranking. Singapore Airlines displaced Qatar Airways, the previous year's winner, which finished second this year, with Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific in third and ANA All Nippon Airways and Turkish Airlines rounding out the top five.

What else Singapore Airlines picked up

Beyond the top overall title, Singapore Airlines also won Skytrax's awards for World's Best Economy Class and World's Best Economy Class Onboard Catering, along with Best Airline in Asia. The airline has now won the overall World's Best Airline title six times since the award's inception, a record that reflects a long-running reputation for consistency across cabin classes rather than a single standout product.

Why it matters for Indian travellers

Singapore Airlines operates one of the more extensive India networks among global full-service carriers, connecting several Indian metros to Singapore's Changi Airport, a hub commonly used for onward connections across Southeast Asia, Australia and beyond. An independent ranking of this scale is not a booking guarantee of a better experience on any individual route or fare class, but it does feed into how comparison sites and travel agents position the carrier against Gulf and other Asian competitors on price-comparable long-haul itineraries out of India.

How the award works

Skytrax gathers its rankings from passenger surveys covering areas such as cabin comfort, food and beverage, cleanliness, staff service and airport experience, rather than from operational metrics like on-time performance, which are tracked separately by other bodies. Critics of the awards note that survey-based passenger perception can be influenced by marketing and brand reputation as much as by measurable service quality, a limitation Skytrax itself has acknowledged is inherent to any large-scale perception survey.

Traveller tips

  • The full 2026 rankings and category winners are published on Skytrax's own website; check there directly for the complete list beyond the top five.
  • An airline award reflects average passenger sentiment across a wide route network, not a guarantee for any specific route, aircraft type or fare class you book.
  • If comparing long-haul options from India via Singapore, factor in layover length and visa transit rules at Changi alongside any award rankings.
  • As with any third-party ranking, confirm current details directly with Skytrax's official announcement before citing specific award categories.
