One of Europe's few inhabited medieval citadels, Sighișoara pairs a 14th-century clock tower with pastel-painted lanes that make it one of Romania's most photographed small towns.

Sighișoara, in the heart of Transylvania, is one of the few inhabited medieval citadels left standing in Europe, its cobbled lanes, coloured facades and fortified towers still forming the working centre of the town rather than a walled-off museum piece. It is compact enough to photograph thoroughly in an afternoon, and consistently ranks among Romania's most-shared destinations on Instagram. Here are seven of its best spots.

1. The Clock Tower
Built in the 14th century and given its present baroque roof and coloured tiles after a 17th-century fire, the 64-metre Clock Tower is Sighișoara's landmark and its best viewpoint, with an upper gallery looking out over the citadel's rooftops.
2. Strada Tâmplarilor's colourful houses
This narrow street inside the citadel is lined with pastel-painted 16th- and 17th-century houses, one of the most photographed rows of buildings in the old town and a reliable spot for colour against cobblestone.

3. The Scholars' Stairs
A covered wooden staircase of around 175 steps climbs from the citadel toward the Church on the Hill, its weathered timber roof and stepped perspective making it one of the town's more distinctive frames.
4. The Church on the Hill
At the top of the Scholars' Stairs, this Gothic church and its surrounding hilltop cemetery give a quieter, greener contrast to the citadel below, along with wide views back over Sighișoara's rooftops.
5. The Citadel's main square
Piața Cetății, ringed by pastel merchant houses and outdoor cafe tables, is the citadel's social centre and photographs well both by day and in the evening, when the surrounding facades are lit.
6. Tailors' Tower and the fortification walls
Sighișoara's surviving guild towers, including the Tailors' Tower, are remnants of the nine towers that once studded the citadel walls, and the stretches of wall still standing make a good backdrop away from the busier main square.
7. The citadel's cobbled approach lanes
The narrow, uphill lanes leading into the citadel from the lower town frame the Clock Tower at a distance and are quieter than the square itself, particularly early in the morning before day-trip crowds arrive.
Traveller tips
- Sighișoara is a common stop on Transylvania road trips between Brașov and Cluj-Napoca, and also reachable by train from both cities.
- Early morning or late afternoon light, and weekday visits, give the citadel's streets and square without the busiest day-trip crowds.
- The Clock Tower houses a small history museum; check current opening hours before planning a visit around it.
- Sighișoara's cobbled streets and the Scholars' Stairs involve some uneven walking; comfortable footwear is worth it.
