Siem Reap exists almost entirely because of what lies a few kilometres north of it: Angkor, the sprawling complex of temples built by the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries, and among the most photographed archaeological sites on earth. The temples supply most of the postcard images, but the town itself, and the lake beside it, add a handful of their own. Here are seven of the most photographed spots.

1. Angkor Wat's reflection pools at sunrise

The single most reproduced image of Cambodia: Angkor Wat's five towers mirrored in the pools in front of its western entrance, timed to the sunrise crowds who gather before dawn to catch the temple silhouetted against a colouring sky.

2. Ta Prohm's tree-root ruins

Left largely as it was found rather than fully cleared and restored like Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm is known for the silk-cotton and fig tree roots that have grown directly through and over its stone galleries, a combination of temple and jungle that gained wider fame after scenes from Tomb Raider were filmed there in 2000.

3. The faces of the Bayon

At the centre of Angkor Thom, the Bayon temple carries more than 200 large stone faces carved into its towers, generally believed to represent the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, though some scholars connect them to King Jayavarman VII himself; their serene, faintly smiling expression has become one of Angkor's most recognisable close-up shots.

4. Angkor Thom's South Gate

The causeway leading to Angkor Thom's South Gate is lined with rows of stone figures, gods on one side and demons on the other, gripping a giant naga serpent in a depiction of the Hindu myth of the churning of the ocean of milk, framed by the gate's own tower of carved faces.

5. Phnom Bakheng at sunset

A steep climb up Angkor's oldest major temple mountain rewards visitors with a wide view over the forest canopy toward Angkor Wat's towers in the distance, making it one of the park's most popular sunset viewpoints, with visitor numbers now capped to manage the crowds and protect the ancient stonework.

6. Tonle Sap's floating villages

Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, Tonle Sap, expands and contracts dramatically with the seasons, and the stilted and floating villages along its edges, some built by Vietnamese and Cham fishing communities, offer a very different, water-level image of Cambodia from the stone temples inland.

7. Pub Street at night

Siem Reap's most touristed strip lights up after dark in a wash of neon and market stalls, a deliberately loud, colourful contrast to the day's temple visits and an easy way to close out a photo set with the town itself rather than another ruin.

Traveller tips

  • Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, which opened in 2023, is the main gateway; confirm current route options, as many itineraries from India still connect through Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City or Singapore.
  • A multi-day Angkor pass allows repeat entries across one, three or seven days, useful for spreading sunrise, sunset and midday visits across different temples.
  • Sunrise at Angkor Wat draws large crowds; arriving very early or choosing a quieter temple for sunrise are both common workarounds.
  • Cambodia's dry season, roughly November to April, is the most comfortable for a full day of temple-hopping.
