Setenil de las Bodegas, a small town in Cádiz province in Andalusia, is built directly into and under a rock overhang carved by the Rio Trejo, with house fronts fixed onto the cliff face and the stone itself forming the interior walls and ceilings of many homes. It's one of Spain's more physically unusual white towns, and its layered, rock-shaded streets photograph like almost nowhere else in the region. Here are seven spots worth the frame.

1. Calle Cuevas del Sol

One of Setenil's two signature cave streets, Calle Cuevas del Sol runs along the sunnier side of the ravine and takes its name, meaning Street of the Sun Caves, from the light it gets for most of the day.

2. Calle Cuevas de la Sombra

Directly across the ravine, Calle Cuevas de la Sombra, the Street of the Shade Caves, sits almost permanently out of direct sun beneath a deeper rock overhang, and the contrast in light between the two streets is part of the draw.

3. The Rio Trejo footbridges

Several small bridges cross the Rio Trejo through the centre of town, and they give the clearest side-on view of the rock overhangs stacked with whitewashed houses on both banks at once.

4. The ruined Moorish castle

Setenil's hilltop castle dates to the Moorish period and held out through repeated sieges before falling to Christian forces in 1484; only fragments of the fortress remain, but the climb up gives a wide view back down over the town's rooftops and ravine.

5. Plaza de Andalucía

The town's small main square, ringed by cafes with rock ceilings built straight into the overhang, is the most straightforward spot to sit at street level with the layered rock and houses in frame.

6. Iglesia de la Encarnación

Setenil's parish church, built from the sixteenth century onward on the site of an earlier mosque, sits above the ravine with a bell tower that stands out against the whitewashed houses stacked beneath it.

7. The upper viewpoint over the ravine

Climbing out of the ravine toward the castle ruins opens up a wider vantage over the whole town at once, the point where Setenil's rock-and-whitewash layering reads most clearly as a single scene rather than a single street.

Traveller tips

  • Setenil de las Bodegas is around an hour's drive from Ronda and roughly two hours from either Malaga or Seville, with no direct rail link.
  • The town's streets are narrow, stepped in places, and largely closed to through traffic; a car is best left in one of the car parks at the edge of town.
  • Cafes built into the rock overhangs stay noticeably cooler in summer, a natural effect of the stone rather than air conditioning.
  • Early morning or late afternoon light gives the most even exposure between the sunlit and shaded cave streets.
