Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is set to relaunch nonstop service between Mumbai and Copenhagen from 1 October 2026, marking the carrier's return to the Indian market after roughly 17 years without a direct India route. The route was originally due to begin on 2 June 2026, but that inaugural flight turned back after final Indian regulatory clearance did not arrive in time; the carrier has since secured approval and rescheduled the launch for 1 October.

The route and schedule

SAS will fly the route five times a week using an Airbus A330-300 configured with 266 seats. Reports citing the carrier's published schedule show flight SK970 departing Mumbai at 6:30am and arriving in Copenhagen at 12:15pm, with the return flight SK969 departing Copenhagen at 4:10pm and landing in Mumbai at 4:30am the following day.

Why it matters for Indian travellers

A nonstop Mumbai-Copenhagen service gives western Indian travellers a new one-stop route into Scandinavia and, via Copenhagen's onward network, into other Nordic cities and several North American gateways, without routing through the Gulf or other European hubs that currently dominate that corridor. It also restores a direct link between two aviation markets that have gone without one for nearly two decades.

What to check before booking

As with any newly launched route, opening fares, seasonal frequency and connecting itineraries are best confirmed directly through SAS or a travel agent closer to the departure date, and travellers should verify current visa and entry requirements for Denmark and the wider Schengen area with official sources before booking. Given the route's earlier postponement, it is also worth confirming operational status shortly before travel.

Traveller tips

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai is the departure point; SAS operates from Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) on the return leg.
  • Five-times-weekly frequency means the route does not operate daily; checking the exact days of operation is essential when planning connections.
  • Indian nationals require a Schengen visa for Denmark; standard Schengen visa processing times apply and should be planned for well ahead of travel.
  • Confirm all fares, schedules and entry requirements with SAS and official government sources before booking, given the route's history of schedule changes.
