Rothenburg ob der Tauber, in Bavaria, is generally regarded as Germany's best-preserved walled medieval town, its fortifications still tracing almost the entire historic centre. First recorded around 950 AD, it briefly ranked among the larger cities of its time before later growth passed it by, which is largely why it survives today looking much as it did centuries ago. Here are seven spots worth the frame.

1. Plönlein

The town's single most photographed corner, Plönlein is a small forked junction where a half-timbered house sits wedged between the Siebersturm tower and the Kobolzellertor gate, with a fountain in front. It's the image most associated with Rothenburg, and for good reason.

2. The town wall walkway

Rothenburg's Stadtmauer, punctuated by 42 towers and gates, can be walked almost in its entirety and gives an elevated view down over the rooftops on one side and open countryside on the other.

3. St. Jakob's Church

St. Jakob's holds Tilman Riemenschneider's Holy Blood altar, carved around 1500 and considered one of the finest surviving works of late Gothic woodcarving in Germany, set inside a church whose twin spires rise above the rest of the old town.

4. The Rathaus tower

Climbing the town hall's tower gives what's usually considered the best overview of Rothenburg's red-roofed old town, laid out within its ring of walls.

5. Burggarten

The Burggarten, a garden laid out on the site of the town's original castle after it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1356, opens onto a wide view over the Tauber valley below, quieter than the streets around Plönlein.

6. Herrngasse

Rothenburg's grandest street, Herrngasse once housed the town's patrician families and still runs in a straight line from the market square to the castle gate, lined with some of the town's largest half-timbered houses.

7. Markusturm and Röderbogen

This tower and arch mark the old town's inner fortification line, which predates the outer wall, and the narrow gateway between them is one of the more atmospheric spots to photograph the town's layered defences.

Traveller tips

  • Rothenburg has no airport of its own; Nuremberg and Frankfurt are the nearest cities with onward rail connections.
  • The town sits on Germany's Romantic Road route and gets busy with day-trip coach groups around midday.
  • Staying overnight inside the walls allows access to the streets after the day-trip crowds leave.
  • Photographing Plönlein early in the morning avoids both crowds and harsh midday light.
