Ras Al Khaimah Is the UAE Emirate Building a Quieter Case for Desert and Mountain Luxury

An hour north of Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah pairs the UAE's tallest peak with a quiet coastline and desert reserve, and its newer resorts are built around that mix rather than a single beachfront strip.

Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost of the UAE's seven emirates, has spent the past decade building a resort scene around what it already had rather than importing a Dubai-style skyline: the Hajar Mountains, a protected coastal mangrove, and a stretch of desert reserve close enough to the sea that a stay here can move between all three without much driving.

Al Wadi's desert reserve

Al Wadi Desert, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve set within a private nature reserve inland from the coast, was one of the first properties to build its whole layout around the desert rather than a beach, with villas spaced across dune and gravel plain and an on-site programme of Arabian oryx conservation that predates the resort itself.

A coastline built for slower stays

Along the water, resorts such as the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah and the Anantara properties on Mina Al Arab and Al Marjan Island have taken a lower-density approach than much of the wider Gulf coast, with private beach frontage and mangrove kayaking routes through the Al Marjan and Mina Al Arab lagoons rather than a continuous hotel strip.

Jebel Jais above it all

The Hajar Mountains rise directly behind the coast, and Jebel Jais, at just under 1,900 metres the UAE's highest peak, has become the emirate's other draw: the Jais Sky Tour zipline, one of the longest in the world, runs down the mountain's face, and a small number of mountain cabins and viewpoint cafés now sit along the road up, giving resort guests a cooler, higher-altitude day trip without leaving the emirate.

Traveller tips

  • Ras Al Khaimah International Airport takes a small number of direct flights; most visitors still arrive via Dubai International, around 45 minutes to an hour by road.
  • The cooler months, from November to March, suit both the desert reserve stays and the Jebel Jais drive; summer temperatures make midday outdoor activity impractical.
  • Alcohol is served within licensed hotel premises but not generally elsewhere in the emirate; standard UAE customs and dress guidance applies outside resort grounds.
  • A rental car or arranged transfer is the practical way to combine a coastal stay with a Jebel Jais day trip, as public transport between the two is limited.
