Point Piper is a small, harbour-fronted peninsula a few kilometres east of Sydney's central business district, reachable in minutes by road yet feeling considerably further removed from the city's daily churn. Its entire waterfront edge is given over to large private homes, most invisible from the street behind hedges and gates, with the harbour itself doing the work that a driveway would elsewhere.

The street that keeps breaking Australia's price record

Wolseley Road, a one-kilometre curve along the peninsula's western edge ending at Lady Martins Beach, is routinely ranked Australia's most expensive street, with median house prices reported in the tens of millions of dollars. Point Piper as a whole holds the record for the country's three most expensive residential sales, transactions reported in the range of A$130 million, A$100 million and A$95 million.

Public records, not gossip

Property ownership on Point Piper is a matter of public record rather than rumour, and it has included former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy Turnbull, Westfield chairman Frank Lowy, and media executive Lachlan Murdoch, each reported in Australian property coverage over the years. The suburb's small size, well under a square kilometre, means these addresses sit close together, all facing the same stretch of harbour.

Little to see, much to look at

Point Piper has almost no public tourist infrastructure of its own; the closest thing to public access is Lady Martins Beach, a small harbour beach at the end of Wolseley Road, and the walk along Wentworth Park Road that skirts the peninsula's edge. Most visitors experience it from the water, on one of the Sydney Harbour ferries or ferries that pass close to shore, or simply as a name attached to a jaw-dropping sale price in the local property pages.

Traveller tips

  • Double Bay, the closest shopping and dining strip, is a short walk or drive from the peninsula and has its own ferry wharf.
  • Lady Martins Beach at the end of Wolseley Road is small and can be crowded on warm weekends, but it remains genuinely open to the public.
  • A harbour cruise or ferry route past Point Piper is the most practical way to see the waterfront homes without trespassing on private streets.
  • There are no hotels within Point Piper itself; nearby Double Bay and Rose Bay have the closest accommodation options.
