7 Most Instagrammable Spots in Piran, Slovenia's Venetian Town on the Adriatic
Piran, a car-free medieval town on Slovenia's short Adriatic coastline, packs Venetian Gothic architecture, a hilltop church and centuries-old town walls into a peninsula small enough to photograph in a single afternoon.

Piran occupies a narrow peninsula on Slovenia's brief stretch of Adriatic coast, its old town built almost entirely during the centuries it spent under Venetian rule, which shows in the tightly packed, pastel-coloured buildings and Gothic detailing that make it look more like a compact Venice than anywhere else in the country. The old town is car-free, small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes, and built around a single central square, which keeps the best photo spots close together rather than spread across a sprawling city.

1. Tartini Square
The town's oval central square, paved in white stone and ringed by Venetian Gothic and neoclassical facades, is named for the violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, born in Piran in 1692, whose statue stands at its centre.
2. St. George's Parish Church and bell tower
Perched above the old town on a hill, the church's bell tower, modelled on St Mark's Campanile in Venice, can be climbed for a rooftop-level view over the terracotta roofs to the sea.
3. Piran's town walls
Sections of the medieval defensive walls still climb the hillside above town, and the upper stretches offer one of the highest vantage points over the peninsula and the Gulf of Trieste beyond.
4. Cape Madonna and the harbour
The point where the old town meets open water, with the round Piran Tower and a clear line of sight back along the harbourfront, is one of the more reliable spots for a wide shot of the whole peninsula.

5. The narrow lanes off Tartini Square
The old town's tangle of narrow, shuttered lanes running back from the square, some barely wide enough for two people to pass, are where Piran's Venetian architectural detail, stone doorways, wrought-iron balconies, shows up close.
6. The waterfront promenade toward Portorož
The coastal walking and cycling path linking Piran to the more built-up resort town of Portorož gives a longer sea-level view back at Piran's skyline, particularly striking at sunset.
7. Punta, the peninsula's tip
The very southern tip of the peninsula, with open Adriatic on one side, is the spot for photographs looking straight down the coastline in both directions at once.
Traveller tips
- Piran's old town is car-free; visitors park at the edge of town and walk or take a shuttle in.
- The bell tower and town walls both charge a small entry fee and can close in poor weather.
- Portorož, with an airport and more hotel capacity, is the more practical base if Piran itself is fully booked.
- Early morning is markedly quieter than midday, when day-trip boats from Venice and Trieste tend to arrive.
