Patagonia has always drawn hikers willing to rough it for the view. What's changed is that the view now comes with underfloor heating, floor-to-ceiling glass, and a wine list, as a new generation of architect-designed lodges has opened around Torres del Paine National Park, built specifically to put every room in direct line with the park's granite towers.

Why Torres del Paine earns the trip

The park's three granite towers, carved by glaciers over millions of years, rise almost vertically out of the Patagonian steppe, a genuinely different scale of mountain scenery than the Alps or Rockies offer. The famous W trek links the towers with the French Valley and Grey Glacier over four to five days, but the newer lodges have made a shorter, far more comfortable version possible for travellers who want the scenery without the multi-day pack-carrying.
