Orchha, on the Betwa river in Madhya Pradesh, was the capital of the Bundela kings from the 16th century, and its palaces, temples, and river cenotaphs still stand in a compact cluster that feels closer to a film set than a tourist town. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.

1. Jahangir Mahal

Built by Bir Singh Deo to welcome the Mughal emperor Jahangir, this palace of domes, jharokhas, and interior courtyards is the town's signature building, best photographed in morning light.

2. Raj Mahal

Older and plainer than its neighbour, the Raj Mahal holds well-preserved wall paintings of religious and courtly scenes in its upper rooms.

3. Chaturbhuj Temple

A large temple on a raised platform, its upper terraces give the best panoramic view over Orchha's palaces and rooftops.

4. Ram Raja Temple

Unusually, this is a temple where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king, and widely described as the only temple in India where he is worshipped as a king.

5. The Betwa river cenotaphs

A row of fourteen royal chhatris, or memorial pavilions, stands along the Betwa's bank, glowing in late-afternoon light and far quieter than the palaces.

6. Laxminarayan Temple

A short walk from the main cluster, this 17th-century temple is known for its vivid interior murals blending religious and secular scenes.

7. Rafting on the Betwa

Short rafting stretches through gentle rapids, run by local operators, offer a different view of the cenotaphs from the water.
