7 Things to Do in Ooty, the Nilgiris' Colonial Hill Station

Founded as a British hill station in the early 19th century, Ootacamund still runs on a colonial-era template of a lake, a botanical garden and a mountain railway, set inside Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri hills.

Ooty, formally Ootacamund, was developed from the 1820s as a hot-season retreat for British officials based in Madras, and much of its layout, a lake dug for recreation, a botanical garden, a church and a network of bungalows, still follows that original template. It sits in the Nilgiri hills at over 2,200 metres, cool enough year-round to have earned the region the nickname the Blue Mountains, and remains one of South India's most visited hill stations. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.

1. Ooty Lake

An artificial lake created in the 1820s by damming a mountain stream, now the town's central recreational space, with pedal boats and rowing boats available and a toy train station running along part of its shore.

2. Government Botanical Garden

Laid out in the 1840s on a sloping site below Doddabetta, the garden holds a wide collection of temperate and subtropical species alongside a fossilised tree trunk estimated to be millions of years old, and stays a popular local walking spot beyond its tourist appeal.

3. Doddabetta Peak

At just over 2,600 metres, this is the highest point in the Nilgiris, reached by road with a short final walk to a telescope house at the summit, and offers wide views over the surrounding hills on a clear day.

4. Nilgiri Mountain Railway

A UNESCO World Heritage metre-gauge line that climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty using a rack-and-pinion system on its steepest sections, still hauled in places by steam locomotives dating to the early 20th century.

5. Rose Garden

Spread across a terraced hillside, this is among the larger rose gardens in India by variety count, with thousands of cultivars laid out in tiers below Elk Hill.

6. St Stephen's Church

Consecrated in the late 1820s, this is among the oldest churches in the Nilgiris, built in a plain colonial style with a small cemetery beside it holding graves of several early British administrators.

7. Pykara Lake and Falls

A reservoir and waterfall roughly 20 kilometres outside town, framed by eucalyptus groves, with a separate viewpoint for the falls and boating available at the lake itself.

Traveller tips

  • Coimbatore is the nearest major airport, roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive up the Nilgiri ghat road.
  • Book Nilgiri Mountain Railway tickets in advance in peak season, since seats sell out well ahead on the more scenic morning services.
  • Ooty's evenings stay cool year-round; pack warm layers even for a summer visit.
  • The botanical garden and Doddabetta Peak can be combined in a single half-day, since both sit on the same side of town.
