Why Kenya's Masai Mara Tented Camps Are the Safari Stay to Book for the Migration

The Great Migration, when more than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, runs roughly from July to October, and the Mara's small luxury tented camps are where the season is best experienced. Canvas suites with proper beds, private bathrooms, and a verandah facing the plains put guests inside the ecosystem rather than behind a lodge wall.

Why tents beat lodges here

Camps in the Mara typically hold a dozen or so tents, which keeps game-drive vehicles per sighting low and lets guides reposition quickly when a herd gathers at the Mara River. Many sit in private conservancies bordering the national reserve, where off-road driving, night drives, and guided walks are allowed, none of which are permitted inside the reserve itself.

What the better camps include

The stays worth paying for bundle guided drives, all meals, and park fees into one nightly rate, with a dedicated guide and vehicle for the length of the trip. Bush breakfasts on the plains and sundowners at a viewpoint are standard at the higher tiers, and several camps run their own hot-air balloon partnerships for dawn flights over the reserve.

When to go

River crossings peak between roughly late July and September, though timing follows the rains and no operator can guarantee a specific crossing. Camps book out many months ahead for that window; the shoulder months of June and October offer thinner crowds and lower rates while the herds are still in the ecosystem.

Traveller tips

  • Book at least six to nine months ahead for July to September; the best-positioned camps fill first.
  • Choose a conservancy camp if you want night drives and walking safaris, which the national reserve does not permit.
  • Pack neutral, layered clothing, since early-morning drives are cold and midday is hot.
  • Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for most visitors, so check the current entry rules before flying.
