India Warns Travellers: Malaysia's Visa-Free Entry Isn't a Backdoor to a Job
The Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has issued an advisory against using Malaysia's 30-day visa-free facility to seek work, warning of a rise in cases where fraudulent agents' false job promises have led to overstays, exploitation and detention.

The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur issued an advisory on 22 September 2026 cautioning Indian nationals against travelling to Malaysia on its visa-free tourist facility with the intention of taking up work. The advisory follows what it described as a noticeable rise in cases of Indian travellers being misled by unscrupulous agents with false job offers, leading to visa overstays, illegal residency status, exploitation by employers and, in some cases, detention and legal action by Malaysian authorities.

What the visa-free facility actually covers
Malaysia's visa-free arrangement lets Indian passport holders stay in the country for up to 30 days without a visa, a facility currently in place until 31 December 2026, but it is intended exclusively for tourism, business meetings, social visits and transit. The high commission's advisory stresses that taking up employment on this basis is a violation of Malaysian immigration law, regardless of any assurances given by agents arranging the trip.

What genuine entry requires
All travellers using the visa-free facility, including those with no intention of working, must still complete Malaysia's Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within three days of arrival and be prepared to show return tickets, hotel bookings and proof of sufficient funds at the immigration counter. Anyone travelling for legitimate work in Malaysia needs a proper employment pass or work visa arranged in advance; the visa-free facility does not provide a route to one.
This is based on the Indian High Commission's advisory of 22 September 2026, reported by Indian and Malaysian outlets in the days since; travellers should confirm current entry requirements with the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur or the Malaysian Immigration Department before travelling, as enforcement practices can change without wide notice.
Traveller tips
- Complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours of arrival; it is free and takes only a few minutes.
- Carry proof of return travel, accommodation and sufficient funds, as immigration officers have been asking for these more consistently under the tightened checks.
- Do not rely on agents offering jobs in Malaysia arranged around visa-free tourist entry; genuine employment requires a proper work permit obtained in advance.
- Check the High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur's official advisories before travel, as visa-free terms and enforcement can be updated with little notice.
