Mahabaleshwar sits at around 1,350 metres in Maharashtra's Western Ghats, roughly four hours by road from both Pune and Mumbai, and it has been a hill retreat since well before India's independence, when the British made it the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency. That history is still visible in its old bungalows and churches, but the modern town is better known for the strawberry farms that cover the surrounding hillsides, and for the string of viewpoints looking out over the plunge to the Konkan coast below. Here are seven ways to spend time there.

1. Row or paddle-boat on Venna Lake

An artificial lake in the middle of town, Venna Lake is the easiest, least strenuous activity Mahabaleshwar offers, with boating, horse rides and a row of stalls selling the town's strawberries and homemade fudge along the bank.

2. Day-trip to Pratapgad Fort

Built in 1656 on the orders of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Pratapgad is where Shivaji's forces famously defeated the Adilshahi general Afzal Khan in 1659, and the hilltop fort, roughly 45 minutes from town, still holds a shrine to Shivaji and sweeping views over the surrounding Sahyadri range.

3. Taste your way through Mapro Garden

A strawberry-processing brand's factory outlet and garden on the road towards Panchgani, Mapro Garden sells jams, crushes and the region's trademark strawberries-and-cream, and is usually the first stop for anyone wanting to understand why the town is so associated with the fruit.

4. Watch the sunset from Arthur's Seat or Kate's Point

Several viewpoints on the town's southern edge look straight down a sheer drop to the Konkan plain; Arthur's Seat and Kate's Point are the two most visited, and both are at their best in the hour before sunset.

5. Visit the old Mahabaleshwar Temple

Near Old Mahabaleshwar, a short drive from the main town, this ancient temple complex is considered the symbolic source of the Krishna river, one of five rivers said to originate in the area, and it remains an active site of pilgrimage rather than only a tourist stop.

6. Walk to Lingmala Waterfall

A short trail leads to this seasonal waterfall, at its fullest and most dramatic during and just after the monsoon; a viewing platform gives a safer vantage point than approaching the base directly.

7. Explore Old Mahabaleshwar's colonial quarter

The original hill station settlement predates the modern town centre and holds Christ Church, one of the oldest British-era churches in the region, along with a scattering of colonial bungalows that give a sense of Mahabaleshwar before it became a mass tourist destination.

Traveller tips

  • Pune's airport is the nearest with regular flight connections, followed by a roughly four-hour drive.
  • The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain and the fullest waterfalls, but also thick fog that can block viewpoint vistas; October to June generally gives clearer skies.
  • Strawberry season runs roughly from March to May; visiting outside this window means fewer working farms to see.
  • Weekends and holidays draw heavy day-trip traffic from Pune and Mumbai, so a weekday visit is considerably quieter.
