Peru Has Overhauled Machu Picchu Ticket Sales, Here's the New 15-Minute Rule
Peru's Ministry of Culture began a 30-day trial on 22 September 2026 of a direct-purchase ticketing system for Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, replacing the old multi-hour reservation hold with a 15-minute payment window.
Sep 24, 2026 · BigTravel.inPeru's Ministry of Culture began a 30-day live trial on 22 September 2026 of a new direct-purchase system for Machu Picchu and Inca Trail entry tickets, replacing the multi-hour reservation hold that had frustrated travellers trying to book a visit. Tickets are now sold directly through the official platform, tuboleto.cultura.pe, with no advance reservation step before payment.
How the new system works
Under the previous system, visitors could hold a preferred date, circuit and entry time for an extended window before completing payment, a process widely criticised for letting bots and resellers tie up availability. The new process removes that hold entirely: buyers select a date, visitor circuit and entry time, enter their details and must complete payment within 15 minutes, or the slot is released back into the pool for other buyers.
What changes for Inca Trail hikers
Under the Ministry's revised 2026 rules, entry tickets to the Machu Picchu citadel are no longer automatically bundled with an Inca Trail trekking permit, meaning hikers completing the classic multi-day trek now need to arrange a separate citadel ticket alongside their trek permit rather than assuming the two are combined.
A price rise alongside the new process
The changes have arrived alongside a reported increase to the standard Machu Picchu entry ticket price for 2026, part of a broader restructuring of fees that also folds in access to natural areas around the site managed by Peru's protected-areas authority, SERNANP. Exact current pricing by circuit is best checked directly on the official platform before booking, as it has shifted more than once this year.
Confirm before you book
The Ministry has described this as a trial period, with adjustments possible before the system is finalised, and ticket platforms, prices and circuit options for Machu Picchu have changed several times in recent years. Travellers planning a visit should confirm current booking steps, prices and Inca Trail requirements directly on tuboleto.cultura.pe or through a licensed operator before finalising travel dates.
Traveller tips
- Have payment details ready before starting a booking; the 15-minute window applies from the moment a date and time slot is selected.
- Inca Trail trekkers should confirm with their operator whether a separate Machu Picchu citadel ticket has been arranged alongside the trek permit.
- Machu Picchu's daily visitor numbers remain capped by circuit, so popular dates and morning entry times can still sell out quickly even under the new system.
- Aguas Calientes, the town below the citadel, remains the usual base for an early entry; the first train up from Ollantaytambo or Cusco should be booked well ahead in high season.
