Lyford Cay occupies the western tip of New Providence, the Bahamian island that also holds the capital, Nassau, but it operates on entirely different terms: a gated, privately administered community developed from 1959 by E. P. Taylor, the Canadian brewing and thoroughbred-racing magnate. Taylor bought the undeveloped peninsula and built it into a private colony centred on the Lyford Cay Club, a members-only club with its own marina, golf course and beach, and the surrounding estate lots were sold to a wealthy international clientele from the outset.

An enclave built for privacy, not visibility

Unlike Nassau's cruise-ship harbour a short drive away, Lyford Cay was never designed to be seen. Its roads are private, its beaches are restricted to residents and club members, and the development has long marketed itself on discretion rather than spectacle, a contrast with more publicly glamorous old-money resorts elsewhere in the Caribbean. The Bahamas' long-standing tax advantages for wealthy residents have reinforced that pull, and Lyford Cay has functioned for decades as a winter base for an international set of business and finance figures who prize the privacy the gates provide.

A famous, long-term resident

The best-documented of Lyford Cay's residents is the actor Sean Connery, who made the Bahamas his home for much of his later life and lived at Lyford Cay for decades until his death in 2020, a fact widely reported at the time by international press covering his passing. His long residency there is one of the clearest, most publicly confirmed details of who has actually called the enclave home, in a community that otherwise reveals very little about the people behind its gates.

What a visitor can actually see

Lyford Cay itself is not generally open to non-members or non-residents, so most visitors experience it from the outside: from boats passing the marina entrance, or from nearby public beaches and roads on New Providence. The wider island offers plenty in its own right, from Nassau's colonial old town to Cable Beach's public shoreline, without requiring access to the private enclave next door.

Traveller tips

  • Lynden Pindling International Airport, roughly a 20-minute drive away, is New Providence's main gateway and the most practical arrival point.
  • Lyford Cay's club, marina and beaches are private; general visitors should not expect entry without a member's invitation.
  • Nassau's public beaches and historic centre, both a short drive from Lyford Cay, offer an accessible alternative for a day exploring the same part of the island.
  • Winter (December to April) is peak season on New Providence, with the mildest weather and the busiest hotel rates.
