7 Things to Do in Lambasingi, the Eastern Ghats Village Known as Andhra Pradesh's Kashmir

Lambasingi sits at around 1,000 metres in the Eastern Ghats, in the Chintapalli area above Visakhapatnam, and owes its reputation almost entirely to temperature: on winter mornings in December and January, it occasionally drops close to freezing, rare enough for coastal Andhra Pradesh to have earned the village the nickname 'Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh'. Beyond the cold snap, it's a quiet hill village surrounded by coffee plantations and forest, with a handful of viewpoints and waterfalls within easy reach.

Lambasingi's winter mornings can bring a thin layer of frost, unusual for coastal Andhra Pradesh

1. Catch sunrise over the valley

The main reason most visitors make the drive is the sunrise itself, watched from open ground at the edge of the village as mist settles into the surrounding valleys; arriving before dawn in December or January gives the best chance of seeing frost on the grass.

2. Walk through a coffee plantation

The hills around Lambasingi grow coffee alongside pepper and other spice crops, and several plantations allow visitors to walk through during the cooler months, when the estates are at their most photogenic.

3. Take in the view from Sunkarametta

A viewpoint a short drive from the village, Sunkarametta looks out over a wide sweep of Eastern Ghats hills and valleys and is a popular stop for photographs, particularly early in the morning before cloud builds up.

4. Camp overnight in the hills

A small number of operators run overnight camping stays around Lambasingi, the appeal being the drop in temperature after dark, which is sharper here than almost anywhere else in the state.

5. Visit Thajangi waterfall

A modest waterfall reachable by a walk from the nearest road, Thajangi is at its fullest just after the monsoon and makes for an easy half-day addition to a Lambasingi visit.

6. Drive out to Araku Valley

Araku Valley, another Eastern Ghats hill destination known for its own coffee estates and tribal museum, lies within a reasonably short drive of Lambasingi and is often combined with it as part of the same trip.

7. Try the local honey and coffee

Roadside stalls around Lambasingi sell forest honey and locally grown coffee, produced by the surrounding tribal and farming communities, and make for a straightforward, low-key souvenir of the visit.

Traveller tips

  • Visakhapatnam, roughly three hours away by road, is the nearest airport and railway hub.
  • December and January mornings are the coldest and busiest; the village has limited accommodation, so many visitors day-trip from Araku Valley or Visakhapatnam.
  • Roads into the hills are narrow and winding; an early start avoids both crowds and afternoon cloud cover.
  • Warm clothing is genuinely useful for a winter dawn visit, unusually for coastal Andhra Pradesh.
