Why Lake Garda, Not Como, Is Where Old Italian Money Actually Summers
Larger, warmer, and considerably less photographed than Lake Como, Garda has spent decades quietly holding the crowd that finds Como's fame exhausting.

Lake Como gets the magazine covers, but Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake and a genuine hour closer to Milan's private airports, has spent decades as the quieter alternative for a specific kind of old Italian money that would rather not be recognised on a ferry. Garda's size alone changes the character of a stay, at over 50 kilometres long, it never feels as tightly watched as Como's narrow, villa-lined shoreline.
Sirmione and the peninsula that started it
The medieval town of Sirmione sits on a narrow peninsula jutting into Garda's southern end, ringed by a 13th-century moated castle and Roman ruins, with natural thermal springs feeding several of the area's spa hotels. Its position, a genuine drawbridge separating the old town from the mainland, gives it a level of built-in privacy few lakefront towns in Italy can match.

Why the north shore is where things actually happen
Garda's northern towns, Malcesine and Riva del Garda, sit beneath mountains steep enough to have made the lake one of Europe's serious windsurfing and sailing destinations, giving the old-money crowd here an active daytime alternative to the beach-club routine that defines Como's social calendar. The lake's genuinely private hillside villas, several with their own funicular access, remain almost entirely word-of-mouth bookings.
What it actually costs
A private villa stay on Garda's northern shore runs meaningfully below an equivalent Como property, largely because Garda's fame, and therefore its price premium, has never caught up to its actual scenery.
One honest caution
The lake's famous afternoon thermal winds, the Ora and Vento, that make it a sailing destination also mean lakeside lunches on the northern shore can turn genuinely blustery by early afternoon; book waterfront tables for morning or evening instead.
