Ladakh Beyond the Bike Trip: Pangong Lake and Thiksey Monastery Done Right

Most Ladakh itineraries treat Pangong Tso as a single long day trip from Leh: five hours out, an hour at the lake for photos, five hours back. It is the single worst way to see either the lake or the region around it, and it is also how most visitors end up with altitude sickness on day two.

Acclimatise at Thiksey before you go anywhere near the lake

Thiksey Monastery, twenty minutes from Leh and built in tiers up a hillside in unmistakable resemblance to the Potala Palace, is the right first stop precisely because it asks nothing physically demanding of you while your body adjusts to Leh's 3,500-metre altitude. Time the visit for the 6am morning prayer session in the main hall, when the monastery's young monks chant over horns and drums and the complex is otherwise empty of visitors.

Sleep at the lake, do not day-trip it

Spend at least one night at Pangong itself, in one of the camps at Spangmik or Man village, rather than treating it as a photo stop. The lake's colour genuinely shifts through the day, and the after-sunset and pre-dawn hours, when every tour bus has left, are when it earns the reputation the photographs promise. The altitude at the lake, over 4,300 metres, is a real jump from Leh, so this stage only works safely after at least two full acclimatisation days in town.

The road itself

Go via Chang La pass rather than the newer Wari La route if this is a first visit; Chang La is higher and colder but has proper facilities partway up, while Wari La is scenic but has none if something goes wrong with the vehicle.

Season and permits

June through September is the only realistic window; the road closes with snow outside it. An Inner Line Permit is mandatory for the Pangong route and is issued same-day in Leh through a local travel agent, so there is no need to arrange it before arrival.
