Kanazawa, on Japan's Sea of Japan coast in Ishikawa Prefecture, grew wealthy as the seat of the Maeda clan, one of feudal Japan's most powerful families, and largely escaped the wartime bombing that flattened much of urban Japan. The result is a city where entire Edo-period districts survive intact. Here are seven spots worth building a Kanazawa visit around, each with a direct map link.

1. Kenrokuen Garden

Ranked among Japan's three great gardens and opened to the public in 1874 after two centuries as the Maeda family's private retreat, Kenrokuen takes its name from a classical belief that a perfect garden combines six qualities, including spaciousness and seclusion, and its Kotoji-toro stone lantern, standing on two legs in a pond, is one of the most photographed single features in the country.

2. Higashi Chaya geisha district

Kanazawa's largest surviving teahouse district, established in 1820, is lined with dark wooden lattice-fronted buildings where geiko, the local term for geisha, still perform for private engagements, and several of the historic teahouses are now open to the public as museums or cafes.

3. Kanazawa Castle Park

Rebuilt in stages since the 1990s using traditional carpentry methods and materials after fires repeatedly destroyed the original Edo-period structures, the castle's white-plastered walls and lead-tiled roofs, designed to double as emergency ammunition in a siege, make it one of the more architecturally distinctive reconstructions in Japan.

4. Omicho Market

Kanazawa's main fresh food market since the Edo period, Omicho's covered lanes are packed with stalls selling the Sea of Japan's seafood, including the region's prized snow crab in winter, and its narrow, lantern-lit aisles are as much a photo subject as the produce itself.

5. Nagamachi samurai district

A former residential quarter for the Maeda clan's mid-ranking samurai, Nagamachi keeps its original mud-walled lanes and irrigation channels largely intact, with a handful of former samurai residences, including the Nomura Family Garden, open to visitors.

6. Tsuzumimon Gate, Kanazawa Station

A modern addition rather than a historic one, this drum-shaped wooden gate at the station's east entrance, completed in 2005 and inspired by the tsuzumi hand drum used in traditional Noh theatre, has become the city's unofficial arrival marker, framed by a large glass dome behind it.

7. Oyama Shrine

Dedicated to Kanazawa's founding lord, Maeda Toshiie, the shrine's unusual three-storey gate, built in 1875, blends Japanese, Chinese and European design, including stained glass set into its upper level, a highly unconventional feature for a Shinto shrine gate of its era.

Traveller tips

  • Kanazawa is reachable in about 2.5 hours from Tokyo on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, making it an easy add-on to a Tokyo itinerary.
  • Kenrokuen Garden opens early and is noticeably quieter in the first hour, before tour groups arrive.
  • Higashi Chaya's teahouses are working businesses; photograph respectfully and ask before photographing performers or staff directly.
  • Omicho Market is busiest around midday; an early morning visit gives more room to move through the narrow lanes.
