7 Things to Do in Kalimpong, the Hill Town Darjeeling's Fame Passed By feature image

Kalimpong sits on a ridge in West Bengal's hills, a short drive from Darjeeling but built on a different history, a former staging post on the trade route between Tibet and the Bengal plains, later developed as a hill station and mission-school town under British rule. That trading past left it with a more mixed, understated character than Darjeeling's tea-estate fame, along with some of the same wide Himalayan views. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.

1. Deolo Hill

Kalimpong's highest point, at around 1,650 metres, Deolo Hill offers panoramic views over the town, the Teesta valley below and, on a clear day, the Kanchenjunga range beyond, along with a small park popular for picnics and paragliding launches.

2. Zang Dhok Palri Phodang (Durpin Monastery)

Set on Durpin Hill and inaugurated in the 1970s with the Dalai Lama in attendance, this Tibetan Buddhist monastery holds rare manuscripts and thangka paintings and doubles as one of the town's best viewpoints over the surrounding valleys.

3. Geden Tharpa Choling Monastery

One of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the area, belonging to the Gelug tradition, Tharpa Choling's quieter setting and older murals make it a useful counterpoint to the more visited Durpin Monastery.

4. Dr Graham's Homes

Founded in 1900 by the Scottish missionary Dr J.A. Graham to educate orphaned and Anglo-Indian children, this still-functioning school spread across a large hillside campus is open to visitors for its chapel and grounds, a quiet window into the town's colonial-era history.

5. Kalimpong's flower nurseries

The town has long been a centre for orchid and gladiolus cultivation, supplying cut flowers and nursery stock across India; several nurseries around town welcome visitors to walk through their greenhouses, best timed outside the winter dormant season.

6. Kalimpong Haat and the old market

The town's market streets, steep and dense, sell everything from Tibetan handicrafts and cheese to local produce, and remain a working commercial hub for the surrounding hill villages rather than a tourist bazaar.

7. Gouripur House

A heritage mansion with literary connections, having once hosted the poet Rabindranath Tagore, Gouripur House's colonial-era architecture and hillside setting make it a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in the town's Bengali cultural links.

Traveller tips

  • Kalimpong is roughly a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bagdogra, the nearest airport, and about an hour and a half from Darjeeling by road.
  • Clear Kanchenjunga views are most likely in the early morning; cloud cover tends to build through the day, especially outside winter.
  • The monsoon months, June to September, bring heavy rain and occasional landslides on the approach roads; October to March is generally more reliable for travel.
  • Kalimpong is noticeably less commercialised than Darjeeling, with fewer dedicated tourist facilities, so booking accommodation ahead in peak season is worthwhile.
