The Japan Rail Pass, the multi-day, all-you-can-ride ticket used by most foreign visitors travelling around Japan by train, is going up in price from 1 October 2026. It is the second increase in three years, coming after a sharp revision in 2023, and pushes the pass further from the bargain it was once considered.

What's changing

From 1 October, the standard Ordinary-class seven-day pass rises by ¥3,000 to ¥53,000, the 14-day pass by ¥4,000 to ¥84,000, and the 21-day pass by ¥5,000 to ¥105,000. Green (first) class passes are rising by a comparable margin. The pass remains valid only for travellers entering Japan on Temporary Visitor visa status; residents and long-term visa holders cannot use it.

Why it matters for Indian travellers

India remains one of Japan's fastest-growing inbound markets, and multi-city itineraries taking in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka by shinkansen are common enough that the rail pass is often bought by default. At the new prices, travellers doing only one or two long-haul train legs, such as a single Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo round trip, may find point-to-point tickets work out cheaper than a multi-day pass; it is worth comparing costs against a specific itinerary rather than assuming the pass is the better deal.

What to do about it

Travellers with a Japan trip already planned for this autumn or winter may want to buy before the deadline, since passes purchased ahead of 1 October are expected to lock in the current, lower price. Confirm current prices and purchase-timing rules directly on the official Japan Rail Pass website before booking, since retailer pricing and exchange terms can vary and this is a fast-moving policy.
