Ilulissat Is the Greenland Town Where the View Is Made of Icebergs

A small fishing town in western Greenland has become one of the Arctic's most talked-about stays, built entirely around a UNESCO-listed icefjord that calves house-sized icebergs into the bay below.

Ilulissat, a town of around 4,500 people on Greenland's west coast, owes its growing reputation among serious travellers to something it did nothing to build: the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of the fastest-moving and most productive in the northern hemisphere, calves enormous icebergs directly into Disko Bay. Unlike destinations that market a manufactured experience, Ilulissat's appeal is simply proximity, few places on earth put a hotel room this close to ice on this scale.

A hotel built around the ice, not the town

Hotel Arctic, perched on a headland above the bay, markets itself as the world's northernmost four-star hotel, and its best-known rooms, a cluster of dome-shaped suites facing directly onto the icefjord, are designed so that guests wake up with icebergs in the window rather than a view of the town. Ilulissat's small hotel scene has expanded around the same idea in recent years, with several newer guesthouses and lodges positioning rooms and terraces toward the water rather than the town's colourful wooden houses.

The icefjord trail is the real draw

A boardwalk trail built to protect the fragile tundra leads from the edge of town to a viewpoint over the icefjord, a walk most visitors do at least once regardless of where they are staying, and boat operators run trips out into Disko Bay for closer views of the icebergs and, depending on the season, humpback and minke whales that feed in the nutrient-rich waters nearby.

Getting there is part of the commitment

Ilulissat is reached by air, either on a domestic Air Greenland flight connecting through Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq, or, increasingly, via improving international links as Greenland upgrades its airport network; travellers should check current routings directly with Air Greenland before booking, since schedules to the region change more often than most.

Traveller tips

  • The main summer season, roughly June to August, brings the midnight sun and the most reliable boat access to the icefjord.
  • Winter visits trade iceberg cruises for aurora viewing, but pack for genuinely severe cold and confirm which activities actually run in that season.
  • Book the icefjord-facing rooms well ahead, since they are a small share of the town's limited hotel inventory.
  • Confirm current flight routings and connection points to Ilulissat directly with the airline, as Greenland's air network is still being expanded.
