Why Harbour Island, Not Nassau, Is Where the Bahamas' Old Money Actually Stays
A three-mile pink sand beach, a car-free golf-cart town, and decades of quiet, well-heeled regulars have kept Harbour Island out of the Bahamas' cruise-ship story entirely.

Harbour Island, a sliver of land off the north-east tip of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, has been a fixture on the East Coast old-money circuit for decades, long before most of the Caribbean had a marketing department. Its three-mile pink sand beach, a colour caused by crushed coral and shell fragments mixing into the sand, is the headline, but the real draw is what the island has resisted becoming.
A town built for golf carts, not cars
Dunmore Town, the island's only settlement, is a grid of colonial-era clapboard houses and picket fences small enough to cross on foot in minutes, and golf carts remain the main form of transport. There is no runway long enough for large jets, so most visitors connect via a short flight or ferry from Eleuthera's North Eleuthera Airport, a deliberate extra step that keeps day-trip crowds away.

Where the regulars stay
The island's hotels run small and design-led rather than large-scale, with a handful of boutique properties and private rental cottages making up most of the accommodation. That capped scale, more than any single hotel, is why the island has kept its low-key reputation intact for so long.
Why it stays under the radar
Harbour Island has no cruise dock and no large-scale resort development, a combination that has kept it structurally different from Nassau and the more built-up parts of the Bahamas even as the wider region has grown busier. That absence of infrastructure is, for its regular visitors, the entire point.
Traveller tips
- Fly into North Eleuthera Airport, then take the short ferry across to Harbour Island.
- Golf carts are rented on arrival and are the only practical way to get around.
- Beach access is easiest on the island's east-facing pink sand side; the harbour side in Dunmore Town is calmer for swimming.
- Book accommodation well ahead for the winter high season, given how few rooms the island actually has.
