7 Most Instagrammable Spots in Gozo, Malta

A short ferry ride from Malta's main island, Gozo trades Valletta's baroque density for red-sand beaches, one of the world's oldest free-standing structures, and a fortified hilltop citadel with views over the whole island.

Gozo is the second-largest island in the Maltese archipelago, reached by a roughly 25-minute ferry crossing from Ċirkewwa on mainland Malta to Mġarr harbour. It's noticeably quieter and greener than Malta proper, with a slower pace built around fishing villages, terraced farmland and a scatter of ancient sites that predate the island's better-known baroque architecture by thousands of years.

1. Ramla Bay's red sand

Gozo's largest sandy beach gets its distinctive reddish-orange colour from iron oxide in the surrounding sandstone, a striking contrast to the pale limestone sand found across most of the Maltese islands.

2. Calypso's Cave viewpoint

On the hillside above Ramla Bay, a small cave is associated by local tradition with Calypso's island Ogygia from Homer's Odyssey; the cave itself is unremarkable, but the viewpoint above it gives one of the best wide shots of the bay below.

3. Ġgantija Temples

Near the town of Xagħra, the Ġgantija temple complex ranks among the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, predating both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Megalithic Temples of Malta.

4. The Citadella, Victoria

The fortified Citadella overlooks Victoria (also called Rabat), Gozo's main town, from a hilltop at the island's centre, and its ramparts give a 360-degree view that takes in most of Gozo's countryside on a clear day.

5. Dwejra Bay and the Inland Sea

Dwejra, on Gozo's west coast, is best known for the Azure Window, a natural limestone arch that collapsed into the sea in 2017. What remains is still worth the visit: a small, calm Inland Sea connected to the open water by a narrow rock tunnel, plus Fungus Rock, an isolated islet just offshore.

6. Wied il-Mielaħ Window

A lesser-visited natural rock arch on Gozo's north coast, Wied il-Mielaħ has drawn comparisons to the collapsed Azure Window, and its relative remoteness means far smaller crowds for a similar shot.

7. Xlendi's fishing harbour

A small, sheltered bay lined with fishing boats and a narrow strip of restaurants, Xlendi gives a more everyday, working-village frame than Gozo's headline natural sites, and its cliffs either side make for a compact, dramatic backdrop.

Traveller tips

  • Ferries to Mġarr run frequently from Ċirkewwa on mainland Malta; no advance booking is normally needed outside peak season.
  • Buses connect Mġarr to Victoria and most main villages, though a rented car or scooter gives more flexibility for reaching Ramla Bay and Dwejra.
  • Summer afternoons at Ramla Bay and the Citadella get busy with day-trippers from Malta; early mornings are considerably quieter.
  • Swimming conditions at Dwejra's Inland Sea and the open coast can turn rough with wind; check local conditions before swimming.
