Gokarna, in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district, has two identities layered on top of each other: an old pilgrimage town built around a Shiva temple said to house a fragment of the Atmalinga, and a string of cliff-backed beaches south of town that turned it into a low-key alternative to Goa for backpackers from the 1990s onward. The two rarely feel far apart, since the same short walk that leads out of the temple lanes often ends at a beach. Here are seven ways to spend time here.

1. Mahabaleshwara Temple

The town's spiritual centre, this ancient Shiva temple is linked to the legend of the Atmalinga wrested from Ravana, and Gokarna's name itself, roughly "cow's ear", is tied to local temple mythology. Non-Hindus are generally not permitted inside the inner sanctum, though the temple precinct and surrounding lanes are open to all.

2. Gokarna Beach

The main town beach, used for religious bathing and cremation rites as much as recreation, backing directly onto the temple quarter. It is a good spot for an early-morning or dusk walk to watch the town's daily rhythm rather than for swimming.

3. Om Beach

Named for its double-curved shoreline, said to resemble the Om symbol from above, this is Gokarna's most photographed beach and its most developed, with a run of beach shacks and simple guesthouses along the sand.

4. Kudle Beach

A short walk over the headland from the main town beach, Kudle is broader and quieter than Om Beach, with a laid-back cluster of shacks that has made it a favourite for longer stays.

5. Half Moon and Paradise Beach

Reachable only on foot, by boat, or by a scramble over rocky headlands, these two coves further south are the least developed of Gokarna's beaches, with a handful of simple huts and little else, prized precisely for that isolation.

6. Yana Caves

A day trip inland leads to Yana, where two towering black crystalline limestone formations, known as the Bhairaveshwara and Mohini Shikhara, rise abruptly out of dense forest, each associated with its own local legend and a small shrine at the base.

7. Mirjan Fort

Near the town of Kumta, this sixteenth-century laterite fort is associated with Rani Chennabhairadevi, a regional ruler once known as the "Pepper Queen" for her control of the spice trade through the port below the fort.

Traveller tips

  • Goa's Dabolim Airport, roughly three hours away, is the most convenient air link; Hubballi and Mangaluru airports are the other options.
  • October to March offers the driest, most comfortable weather for beach-hopping.
  • The cliff paths between the southern beaches involve some scrambling and are best avoided just after rain.
  • Modest dress is expected around the temple quarter, even though beachwear is standard on the beaches themselves.
