Why Formentera, Not Ibiza, Is Where the Yacht Crowd Actually Docks

Ask anyone who has actually worked an Ibiza summer where the boats really anchor by day, and the answer is rarely Ibiza Town. It's Formentera, the smaller, flatter, deliberately underdeveloped island a forty-minute ferry south, where the water turns the same Caribbean turquoise as the Maldives and there is, by design, almost nowhere tall enough to block the view.

Ses Illetes is the sandbar-thin strip of beach that shows up in every one of these photos, a stretch of white sand narrow enough to see turquoise water on both sides at once. It sits inside a protected natural park, which is precisely why it has stayed undeveloped while Ibiza's coastline filled in with beach clubs, and it is the reason the yacht crowd anchors offshore here rather than back across the water.

How the day actually runs

The pattern repeats all summer: a private boat or the early passenger ferry from Ibiza Town, lunch at one of the handful of low-key beach restaurants that dot the coast road rather than anything branded, then back across the water in time for dinner, since Formentera itself has almost no nightlife by design. It is the anti-Ibiza day, taken by people who spent the previous night in Ibiza's clubs.

What it actually costs

A sunbed and umbrella at one of Ses Illetes' beach clubs runs a fraction of an equivalent Mykonos or St Tropez day rate, since Formentera has deliberately kept its beachfront development minimal. The ferry across from Ibiza is inexpensive; a private boat charter for the day is where the real spending happens.

One honest caution

July and August afternoons see real congestion in the water off Ses Illetes as boats compete for anchor space, so a June or September visit trades a little bit of peak-season energy for meaningfully calmer water and easier parking, on land and at sea.
