Why Fiji's Reef-Edge Bures Are the South Pacific's Answer to the Maldives

The overwater bungalow is usually filed under French Polynesia or the Maldives, but Fiji's Mamanuca Islands have their own thatch-roofed version, built directly over a living coral reef.

Fiji is made up of more than 330 islands, only about a third of which are inhabited, scattered across the South Pacific between Vanuatu and Tonga. Most of its resort development sits on the mainland island of Viti Levu or in two smaller archipelagos just offshore, the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, where the water turns the shade of turquoise that makes the flight from Nadi worth the transfer.

A local take on the overwater room

The overwater bungalow is most associated with French Polynesia, but Fiji built its own version using the bure, a traditional thatch-roofed cottage design, set on stilts over a fringing coral reef rather than open lagoon. Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Malolo Island, in the Mamanuca group, opened the country's first cluster of overwater bures in 2007, and the format has since become Fiji's signature answer to the Maldives and Bora Bora, on a considerably shorter flight from Australia, New Zealand and increasingly from India via Nadi's growing Asian connections.

Reef over lagoon

Because the bures sit above a living reef rather than a sandy lagoon floor, the water beneath the deck tends to hold more visible marine life than a typical stilted villa elsewhere, snorkelling straight off the ladder is a genuine option rather than a brochure line, though visibility and coral health vary by season and site, and guests should ask each property directly about current reef conditions.

Getting there and around

Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu is the main gateway, with most resort transfers running by boat or seaplane from the Denarau Marina rather than a second flight. The Mamanucas sit closest to Nadi, making them workable even for a short stopover, while the Yasawas further north suit travellers with a few extra days to island-hop by catamaran.

Traveller tips

  • May to October is Fiji's dry season and generally the most reliable stretch for calm boat transfers between islands.
  • Overwater bures cost noticeably more than beach-front rooms at the same resort; a beach bure is a reasonable trade-off on a shorter trip.
  • Check transfer logistics before booking, as boat or seaplane transfers to outer-island resorts are usually a separate cost from the room rate.
  • Fiji's cyclone season runs roughly November to April, worth checking against travel dates even outside the official danger window.
