7 Most Instagrammable Spots in Ella, Sri Lanka
A hill-country town threaded between tea estates and a nine-arch railway viaduct, Ella has become one of Sri Lanka's most photographed stops on the country's classic hill-country circuit.

Ella sits in Sri Lanka's central highlands, a small hill-country town that has grown around two things: a landscape of tea estates folded into steep, misty hills, and a colonial-era railway line that still carries some of the country's most scenic train journeys. Both feed directly into why Ella has become one of the most photographed stops on Sri Lanka's tourist circuit. Here are seven of its most photographed spots.

1. Nine Arch Bridge
Built by British colonial engineers and completed in 1921, reportedly without structural steel owing to wartime shortages, the Nine Arch Bridge remains Ella's defining image, especially when a train crosses it against the tea-covered hills behind, among the most recognisable single images of Sri Lanka's hill country.
2. Little Adam's Peak
A shorter, easier alternative to Sri Lanka's pilgrimage mountain of the same name near Nuwara Eliya, this 1,141-metre hill is reached by a well-marked path of around 30 to 45 minutes and opens onto panoramic views over Ella Gap and the surrounding tea country.
3. Ella Rock
A steeper, longer climb than Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock rewards the effort with a wider view back over the town and valley, and tends to be quieter than its shorter neighbour, since the less obvious trail puts off more casual walkers.
4. Ravana Falls
A cascade dropping in tiers a short drive from town, named for the demon king of the Ramayana, who local legend says hid Sita in caves nearby; the falls are at their fullest, and most photogenic, during and just after the monsoon.
5. Lipton's Seat
A viewpoint above the Dambatenne Tea Factory, reportedly a favourite spot of Sir Thomas Lipton for surveying the tea estates he built through the area in the 1890s, with a panorama that on a clear day is said to stretch as far as the south coast.
6. Dambatenne Tea Factory and estates
The factory below Lipton's Seat still processes tea using much of its original colonial-era machinery and runs short tours explaining the process, set against row upon row of tea bushes climbing the surrounding slopes.
7. Rawana Ella Cave
A cave in the hills above town, also tied by local legend to the Ramayana's Ravana, reached by a short climb and offering a quieter, cooler counterpoint to Ella's more crowded viewpoints.
Traveller tips
- Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo is the main gateway; Ella itself is reached by road or via the scenic hill-country rail line from Kandy or Nanu Oya.
- The Kandy-to-Ella train journey is itself one of the most photographed rail routes in Asia and worth timing a visit around.
- December to March offers the clearest hill-country weather; the monsoon brings mist and rain that can obscure the longer views.
- Trails to Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak are largely unshaded; an early start avoids both the heat and the midday haze that can flatten photographs.
