7 Things to Do in Darjeeling, the Queen of the Hills
Famous for its tea estates and views of Kanchenjunga, Darjeeling pairs a UNESCO-listed toy train with colonial-era hill station charm in the West Bengal Himalayas.

Darjeeling, perched along a Himalayan ridge in northern West Bengal, built its name on tea and altitude, its estates spilling down hillsides that face Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, on clear mornings. A former British colonial hill station, it still moves at a slower pace than the plains below. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.
1. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
Known locally as the toy train, this narrow-gauge railway has climbed the hills on a 2-foot track since 1881 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, one of the few working railways with that status anywhere in the world.

2. Tiger Hill
A pre-dawn drive up Tiger Hill, on clear mornings, gives a wide view of the eastern Himalaya at sunrise, with Kanchenjunga catching the first light and, on the rarest days, a distant glimpse of Everest.
3. Batasia Loop
A spiral railway loop just below Darjeeling town, built so the toy train can lose height gradually, it's also home to a war memorial honouring Gorkha soldiers, with the hills and the town's rooftops laid out below.
4. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park
Specialising in high-altitude species, this hillside zoo is among the few places to see the red panda and snow leopard in a near-natural setting, and adjoins the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded with Tenzing Norgay as its first director of field training.
5. Happy Valley Tea Estate
One of Darjeeling's oldest working tea gardens, established in 1854, Happy Valley runs short tours through its factory, showing the withering, rolling, and drying stages that turn the region's leaves into the tea it's named for.

6. Peace Pagoda
Built in 1972 by the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan-Myohoji, this white stupa on Jalapahar Hill is one of several such pagodas the order built across India, and offers a quiet counterpoint to the town's busier viewpoints.
7. Mall Road and Chowrasta
The pedestrian promenade of Mall Road leads to Chowrasta, the town's central square, still lined with colonial-era buildings and the natural gathering point for an evening walk once the mist rolls in.
Traveller tips
- Bagdogra Airport, around three hours away by road, is the nearest airport; the toy train itself is a scenic add-on rather than the main way in.
- Mornings offer the clearest mountain views; cloud cover tends to build through the afternoon, especially outside winter.
- Carry warm layers year-round, since evenings stay cool even in summer at this altitude.
- Book Tiger Hill sunrise trips through your hotel the evening before, as vehicles leave while it's still dark.
