Twenty minutes from Ooty by road, Coonoor pairs the same Nilgiri tea-estate scenery with noticeably thinner crowds and one of India's last working mountain railways.

Coonoor sits at around 1,850 metres in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri Hills, the second-largest hill station in the district after Ooty but considerably less built up, with tea estates running almost to the edge of the town centre. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.

1. Walk through the tea estates

Coonoor's economy has been built on tea since British planters established estates here in the 19th century, and several working gardens on the town's outskirts remain open for walks along their terraced rows, with the Nilgiri hills rolling out behind in every direction.

2. Dolphin's Nose

A rocky outcrop jutting out over the Nilgiris' western slopes, Dolphin's Nose offers one of the widest panoramic viewpoints in the area, taking in the Catherine Falls valley below on a clear day and the layered hills stretching toward Kotagiri.

3. Sim's Park

A landscaped botanical park laid out in the early 20th century on a natural amphitheatre-shaped valley, Sim's Park holds a wide collection of both native and imported temperate plants and hosts an annual fruit and vegetable show, and remains a favoured spot for an unhurried walk away from the town's main road.

4. Lamb's Rock

A viewpoint a short drive from town looking directly down over the coffee and tea estates of the valley floor, Lamb's Rock is quieter than Dolphin's Nose and is often combined with it as a pair of short outings, best timed for morning visits before mist builds up over the hills.

5. Ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

A UNESCO World Heritage-listed metre-gauge line opened in stages between 1899 and 1908, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty using a rack-and-pinion system on its steepest sections, and the Coonoor-to-Ooty leg is a popular shorter ride for those short on time.

6. Catherine Falls, Kotagiri

A short drive toward neighbouring Kotagiri leads to this two-tiered waterfall dropping through forested rock, best seen just after the monsoon when the flow is at its fullest, and considerably less crowded than the falls closer to Ooty.

7. Coonoor railway station

Built as part of the original Nilgiri line and still in daily use, Coonoor's own station is a modest heritage structure in its own right, with period signage and a small engine shed, and makes a good starting or finishing point for a walk through the older part of town.

Traveller tips

  • The nearest railhead is Mettupalayam, roughly 1.5 hours away, and the nearest airport is Coimbatore, about 2 hours by road.
  • Coonoor is roughly 20 minutes by road from Ooty, making it easy to combine both in a single trip.
  • Nilgiri Mountain Railway tickets, especially in the toy-train's heritage steam-hauled section, sell out during peak holiday season; book ahead where possible.
  • Viewpoints like Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock are best visited in the morning, before afternoon mist typically rolls in.
